About the Author
Dr Patrick Lonergan is a lecturer in English at National University of Ireland, Galway. He writes about theatre for The Irish Times and Irish Theatre Magazine. His first book, Theatre and Globalization, was awarded the 2008 Theatre Book Prize. He has authored two Student Editions of plays by Martin McDonagh and is editor of The Methuen Drama Anthology of Irish Plays.

Lonergan's book is a brilliant and well researched piece of work about an artist whose career, I feel, will only become more influential. Whilst the shock of McDonagh's type of writing for the theatre has definitely worn off, his work in film grows ever more bold and confident. I don't expect that he will become the next Quentin Tarantino, but more a filmmaker in the vein of Michael Mann or William Friedkin.
What is refreshing about the book is the style in which it is written. Too frequently, books on film and theatre are written in such a robotic and dry tone that one can never be sure if the writer has any enthusiasm at all for the subject. It is evident from this book that Lonergan is fascinated with not only McDonagh's works, but in the reactions they provoke and in the debates they raise surrounding modern film and theatre.
