Synopsis
Christopher Lee stars in this British shocker as Phillipe Darvas, the leader of the Theatre of Death, a Grand Guignol theater troupe in Paris. Attracted to one of the leads in their gruesome plays, a police surgeon begins frequenting the theater. At the same time, a series of grotesque murders plague Paris, and soon The theatre of Death falls under suspicion. As the surgeon becomes more involved with the group, he begins to realize that something more sinister that he ever imagined is going on behind the scenes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mystery/horror in unusual setting., 6 Jan 2002
By baron_j_g_austin@hotmail.com (Oxfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
I first saw this film many years ago when it was shown on late-night TV (probably at one a.m). It impressed me then and it impresses me now. What adds to the film is that it is definitely different from the Hammer horrors being made at that time. It's set in a modern day (well, it was modern in 1967) theatre where the main attractions are horror plays which are scripted/directed by Christopher Lee. All seems well until murders start occurring. I thought it had some good twists in the plot and the theatrical atmosphere was well captured. Christopher Lee here had a role that was worthy of his talents. It was also pleasant to see the underrated Julian Glover ('Colonel Breen' in Hammer's 'Quatermass & The Pit') in a solid leading role where, for once, he was able to play the hero! A good supporting cast and the unusual setting also add to the overall quality of this film.

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT GREAT HORROR-BUT GREAT AS A THRILLER, 23 May 2003
This film is a typical who-dunnit film; as a collection of vampire style murders occur, whilst the 'theater of death' is producing plays on the crucifixion of witches, vampires etc.
Without giving too much of the plot or the story away, this film is a good film, as there are a collection of 'twists' that mean that you dont know who the murderer is...
...could it be the theatre director?
...could it be a police man?
...could it be a cast member of the theatre of death?
...could it be an audience member?
...could it be a 'present-day vampire?'
...or could it be someone else?
YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY,AND WAIT AND SEE!
