I have read many books on directing and this is by far the most comprehensive, intelligent and enjoyable read.

John Caird goes through everything you would ever need to know, from rehearsals to performance, programmes to props and many other useful areas that a young director or anyone interested in theatre would find fascinating. The book is full of common sense but also years of directing experience that allow you a deeper understanding of theatre.

I found the book very inspiring and refer to it all the time. The A-Z format means it's easy to reference subjects straight away but for a really extensive look into directing, read from cover to cover. You'll want to read it again and try to absorb as much as you possibly can.

You really will want to have the book with you at all times, ready to refer to in full faith that what you reading is intelligent, in depth and the best directing book out there.

Highly recommended a really delightful read!

Theatre Craft is a brilliantly comprehensive book which covers just about everything you need to know about the ins and outs of the theatre business with brevity and humour. While focusing on the director/actor's side of things, it would certainly be invaluable for anybody working in the industry.

It is a dictionary of theatre terminology, but also so much more than just that - within each entry are practical tips, solutions to common problems, anecdotes - how to do things, and how not to do things. It's superb value; I can't recommend it enough.

If you want a practical reference book on theatre, this is the one you're looking for.

This is superbly-written book for directors, actors and pretty much anyone who works in the theatre. Laid out like an encyclopedia but written with great wit and understanding, John Caird covers a huge range of topics, from the artistic to the practical. Highly recommended.
