Highly readable and informative 30 Oct. 2009
By B. Whitestone - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Roland Bainton has done it again. In a series of biographical sketches of various men over 2 centuries (the 16th and 17th) we see the various influences of vicious religious fanaticism (Tourquemada the Inquisitor, who called himself Christian), true Christian meekness and understanding (Sebastien Castellio) and humanistic intelligence and tolerance, also often calling itself Christian. It is a very interesting and informative study. As always, Bainton excels in putting himself in the shoes and minds of those he writes about, to explain their views.
Maybe the pre-eminent writer on religious liberty in English 22 May 2014
By David H. Eisenberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I recommend all of his books. I have learned more about the history of religious liberty from him than any other writer and perhaps more about liberty in general than any others except Hayek and Popper.
