Book Description

7 Jun 2002

In his critically acclaimed first novel, Kent Haruf delivers the sweeping tale of eighty-year-old Edith Goodnough. Narrated by her neighbour, Edith's tragedies unfold: a tough childhood, a mother's death, a violence that leaves a father dependent on his children, forever enraged. She is a woman who sacrifices everything in the name of family - until she is forced to reclaim her freedom in one dramatic and unexpected gesture. Breathtaking and truthful, The Tie That Binds is a powerful tribute to the demands of rural life, and to the tenacity of the human spirit.

'Plainsong is beautifully crafted, alive and quietly magnificent. I read it in one mesmerising sitting. I had no choice; it wouldn't let me go' Roddy Doyle

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 28 Aug 2013
By Mrs. M. Stamp VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Kent Haruf is one of my favourite authors. His books are short (like life) and very emotional (again, like life). You will cry and you will laugh, you will yearn and you will empathise with his characters and the way he seems to know human nature so well. He is observant to the smallest detail and seems to understand completely the bleakness of life in rural America.
The Tie that Binds is a tale about 80 year old Edith Goodnough, who is under police guard in hospital, charged with murdering her brother. I don't think you will be able to put it down once you have read the first page and if you are like millions of others, you will go on to read all Haruf's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book 16 Jan 2012
By Bess
Format:Paperback
This is the first Kent Haruf book I have read and I loved it (I'm off to find some more). Its a gentle, well rounded, sometimes sad, sometimes funny story. It really does feel as if you're sitting down in a comfy chair listening to the narrator tell the tale of this woman's life - which sounds like a simple thing to do but I suspect very difficult to write successfully. All the characters come to life, you can feel the loneliness and hardships of rural life, you can hear the dialogue in your head and there are just enough descriptive passages to set the scene - without too many flowery bits. Maybe not a 'great' book but I thought very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you like Fannie Flagg, Billie Letts, Mary Lawson then you'll like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The destructiveness of family ties 5 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a well-written narrative which engages the reader immediately. The author shuns all pretentious literary devices whilst telling the story of a woman's sacrifice to family duty. Throughout she is manipulated by the selfish views first of her father & then her brother. Set in the rural west one sees how the harshness of the environment contributes to the unbending attitudes of people.
One feels great sympathy for the protagonists who have such hard but narrow lives. In many ways it depicts a rural life that has fortunately now all but disappeared.
