Enjoyable stuff 5 Dec 2002
By R. J. Hole VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Some may consider that this volume of short stories is redundant now that PKD's short stories have been published complete in the volumes "Beyond Lies The Wub", "Second Variety", "The Father-Thing", "The Days of Perky Pat" and "The Little Black Box". However for those who don't feel they want to wade through ALL of Dick's short stories this is a good collection.

These stories were written between 1953 and 1974 in various magazines. The standard is consistently high and there was only one story I didn't particularly like, "The King of the Elves", which was fantasy. The other stories contain a good variety of themes and if you haven't read any Dick this is a good a place to start as any. An interesting feature of this book is the story notes in the back pages, in these notes each story is commented on by the author. Dick also writes an introduction which should be of interest to aficionados.

It is not easy to describe these stories briefly but some of the themes that appear are: mutants, robots, government, religion, reality, time-travel, abortion, fantasy, Mars, .... Certainly enjoyable stuff.

Sorry not a review - It just occurred to me that with the release of the film "Next" even more money could have been made by reprinting this book as a film tie in. At least then I could have got to read it!
