Book Description

11 Dec 2008 Family Tree Detective
The long-awaited fourth edition of this best-selling manual continues to offer up-to-date guidance both to newcomers and to the more experienced, on how to make best use of the labyrinth of genealogical sources in England and Wales. It takes into account recent, and even some future, changes to the civil registration system, and incorporates many of the vast sources newly available on the internet. There is also a substantial bibliography for those who discover that their ancestors migrated from other countries.New appendices provide research into underregistration of birth and death, and hitherto unpublished details from the 1915 and 1939 National Registers. The family tree detective remains an indispensible source of information on how to locate births, marriages and deaths, and alternative strategies if those searches fail. Dr Colin D. Rogers is a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists, a member of AGRA (the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives), and was for thirty years the Hon. General Editor of the Lancashire Parish Register Society. He runs a consultancy helping banks and solicitors to identify and locate beneficiaries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Demanding perhaps - but worth it. 2 Mar 2011

This is not one of the 'chummy' popular-type guides to family history reseach. No coloured diagrams, brief summaries or over-confident claims. It is just what it says on the cover: a manual for those tracing ancestors in England and Wales. In other words it's a serious book meant to help those who are prepared to undertake some serious reading to boost their research effectiveness. A planned, purposeful reading of the 'The family tree detective' will give you the knowledge and skills to make pleasing progress.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best! 27 Feb 2013

Over the years I have collected a number of books on Family History. I recently bought a used copy of the 1997 third edition of Rogers in my local charity shop. I was so impressed that I immediately ordered a copy of the 4th edition which in addition to updates has an additional twenty pages of text.
The credentials of the author are first class, but from opening the first page I could tell that this author "really knows his stuff." He supplies information in great detail - detail that previously was unknown to me despite reading many books on the topic.
Some reviewers say this is not a book for beginners. I am not sure about this, as I wish I had read this book initially, or at least had it available to dip into. Despite being stuffed full of information, the style is very readable. Without doubt this would be my desert island choice of all the books I have bought. There is an excellent index, thorough references section, and 140 odd pages on looking for parents,40 odd pages on looking for marriages and 50 odd pages on looking for deaths. If you are seriously interested in Family History you can buy no better book than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful for getting through brick walls 11 Aug 2011
A vey useful reference source for those hitting brick walls in areas of their family history research. Probably written for more experienced genealogists than complete novices, but this does not detract from it at all.

This is a very comprehensive guide - now in its fourth edition. The thickness looks daunting at first but repays with the wealth of information contained in it. I think it is a must for those researching family history.
