4.0 out of 5 stars classic heroic fantasy 10 Sep 2004
Format:Paperback
"There came a peculiar, slithering sound from the pit and from it, just to one side of the dais, I saw a great, flat serpent head rise up and sway in rhythm to Horguhl's crooning. It was a sickly yellowish colour, with long fangs curving out of its mouth from the upper jaw. There was a stale, unwholesome smell about it."

For Michael Kane, twentieth-century scientist, this is just one of the perils he is forced to face when he finds himself transported to eon-old Mars. All that stands between him and a savage alien death is his wits and his skill with a sword.

Classic fantasy that is really matched these days!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Super Reader 30 Aug 2007
By Blue Tyson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Moorcock has written an unapologetic, no holds barred, Burroughsian rip..errr.. riff. :) Complete with the same lack of wardrobe for the characters.

Michael Kane, a physicist, becomes involved with a project that can transport consciousness, it appears. Think Adam Strange sort of thing, complete with limited time of travel.

It also happens, than growing up, he lived near a French fencing master, who gave him many, many lessons.

Needless to say, he ends up projected to Mars, meets a princess, fights Blue Giant armies, has an evil raven haired sorceress femme fatale lust after and want to kill him, after seducing his princess' fiance, no less.

He also happens to rescue a relative, make friends with an enemy, and all that sort of thing.

Pure escapism, and a lot of fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite similar to Carson Napier's Cycle from ERB.... 2 Sep 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ever read ERB's (Edward Rice Burroughs)Mars Cycle ? Then you might find some correlation or even similitudes with it.
Anyway, it is still a very good book, great heroic action.
Unless in most of the book from Moorcok, the hero is not a looser from the beginning, he fights his way against all the dangers he might meet.

Read, Read, read..
