5.0 out of 5 stars A tale from an explorer non pariel. 8 July 2009
By P-Rod - Published on
This obviously is not the most popular book. However, it is actually quite good. Richard Burton during this journey is an observer, scientist, and adventurer. He drank lager beer with Brigham Young himself, and I learned a great deal about Artemesia tridentata (sagebrush)-recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 1st Person Account of the West in the Mid-19th Century 26 Feb 2014
By Rodamu - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Richard Burton was a prolific author who wrote many accounts of non-western cultures and explored many areas little known or unknown to Europeans. His account of a trip by stagecoach through the West just before the American Civil War is fascinating for the ordinary details of life and travel given and the interesting characters he met. His impressions of Native Americans were mostly second hand and while he was opened minded for a man of the Victorian era, he still has the mind set of that period. He was a genius and an eccentric character who lived a very adventurous and dangerous life. He enjoyed fighting and volunteered to accompany the US Army to fight some "Indians" but wasn't give the opportunity.
This is not the best edition of this book; I recommend spending more money for a properly formatted and illustrated edition.
