sixth in the latest series of doctor who audio stories featuring paul mcgann as the doctor and sheridan smith as his companion lucie miller. As usual the two have a great chemistry together, the story is complete in one part, and the disc contains interviews with the cast and crew at the end and a trailer for the next release in the season. some of this might be a little longer than usual because the box says sixty minutes running time but I made it almost an hour and a quarter.

The stories in this season have been self contained and you should be able to get into them without having heard the rest of the range. this one does reuse a character from a story in the previous season, lucie's aunty pat, but you shouldnt have any difficulty getting to grips with it if you haven't heard that one as there is good exposition.

The story involves them meeting pat at a hotel she runs in the lake district in the 1980's - some good throwaway references to things of the time set the scene well - only to find her husband has a secret, and some old enemies of the doctor are lurking under the lake. The zygons.

can the doctor save the day from their evil plan? and what will pat's husband do now his secret is out?

a hugely entertaining listen this one, thanks to an excellent supporting cast all putting their all into well drawn characters. In addition to the usual doctor battling the monsters dilemma it also raises some good moral conundrums that make you think. there are a few great character moments on the way that are laugh out loud funny, but the ending is incredibly powerful emotional stuff and you will not forget it in a hurry as a result.

Best in this season so far. an excellent listen.

Ten years later and Aunty Pat is in her prime. She's snagged herself an ex rock star at the Kendal Folk Festival & now, in the brave new world of the early 1980s they manage together a snazzy hotel on the poetic and shingly shore of Lake Grasmere.

However, still waters run deep & friends from the past are returning, intent on milking the old cash-cow as the arrival of the Eighth Doctor & Lucie will end with the Doctor having to make a difficult choice.

First released in 2008, this is the sixth episode of the second season of standalone releases for Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor outside of the monthly range of Big Finish releases. This is a one disc release, with a single 50 minute episode. There are some interviews with cast and crew at the end of the disc.

Following from the bouncy, fun, and excellent ‘Grand theft Cosmos’, Big Finish treat us to a dark, moving and equally excellent tale in this release. The Doctor and Lucie are in the Lake District in the Eighies, visiting Lucie’s Auntie Pat (last encountered in the Seventies in ‘The Horror Of Glam Rock’), who is now running a small hotel with her husband Trevor. But, as usual, not all is as it seems and things all start to go wrong when some of Trevor’s old mates from the music business show up.

It’s a multilayered story, one that contrasts some powerful character moments with lighter humerous touches. The presence of the great Tim Brooke-Taylor ensures that the humerous touches are played to perfection, his Mimms is, for me, one of the real highlights of the episode. But there is a dark undercurrent here, as the Doctor battles to save the earth. Sheridan Smith excels as Lucie, portraying her with both strength and vulnerability as required. Paul McGann is as usual excellent as the Doctor, full of energy and compassion, doing anything to prevent his companion getting hurt.

It’s a highlight of this series. 5 stars.
