sixth in the latest series of doctor who audio stories featuring paul mcgann as the doctor and sheridan smith as his companion lucie miller. As usual the two have a great chemistry together, the story is complete in one part, and the disc contains interviews with the cast and crew at the end and a trailer for the next release in the season. some of this might be a little longer than usual because the box says sixty minutes running time but I made it almost an hour and a quarter.
The stories in this season have been self contained and you should be able to get into them without having heard the rest of the range. this one does reuse a character from a story in the previous season, lucie's aunty pat, but you shouldnt have any difficulty getting to grips with it if you haven't heard that one as there is good exposition.
The story involves them meeting pat at a hotel she runs in the lake district in the 1980's - some good throwaway references to things of the time set the scene well - only to find her husband has a secret, and some old enemies of the doctor are lurking under the lake. The zygons.
can the doctor save the day from their evil plan? and what will pat's husband do now his secret is out?
a hugely entertaining listen this one, thanks to an excellent supporting cast all putting their all into well drawn characters. In addition to the usual doctor battling the monsters dilemma it also raises some good moral conundrums that make you think. there are a few great character moments on the way that are laugh out loud funny, but the ending is incredibly powerful emotional stuff and you will not forget it in a hurry as a result.
Best in this season so far. an excellent listen.
