Product Description

Fix bayonets and die like British soldiers do! ORDER TO BRITISH TROOPS. An authoritative account of the Zulu War of 1879. The Redcoat campaign in Zululand in 1879 holds a special place in the pantheon of military history. Its two most famous battles - the dreadful slaughter at Isandlwana and the heroic defence of Rorke¹s Drift still hold an enduring fascination. These epic encounters are laced with tales of courage and valour on both sides. The incredible determination of the Zulu warriors and the sheer professionalism and bravery of the British soldiers ensures that the Zulu Wars maintain their place in the popular imagination. Featuring footage from the movie Zulu Dawn this video is a spectacular true record of the war against the Zulus. Exciting specially filmed reconstructions and re-enactments, plus dramatised eye-witness accounts combine with the very latest 3D mapping techniques and superb period imagery to tell the epic story of the momentous chapter in military history. Narrated by Robert Powell. Featuring expert comment and analysis by Dr David Chandler, the world s foremost military historian and former head of War Studies at Sandhurst.

An excellent DVD by The History Zone and Narrated by Robert Powell but also included in the DVD are the Documentary, Scene Selection, Test Your Knowledge and Picture Gallery.

The Documentary gives clear knowledge with the background information, the ultimatum of the British and invasion of Zululand, the British Army including details like the weapons and uniforms, Major John Dartnell, the battle of Isandlwana-it's victory and Rorke's Drift.

It uses actors to speak the real words used in diary's and letters of the times and re-enactments / reconstruction footage and from both Zulu and Zulu Dawn films. It also includes maps and drawings with some nice photos as well. The computer maps give good detail and the interviews with the specialist to make it a very well put authoritative account of the war.

This was one of the first (of many) Cromwell military history documentaries made in the 1990s. It gives a good overview of the Zulu Wars but looks rather quaint compared to more recent BBC/History Channel offerings with bigger budgets, CGI, lots of experts etc. It was very obviously made on a tight budget. There is a lot of stock footage from the film 'Zulu Dawn', for example. While the film uses good first-hand accounts, the actors are all too obviously reading from an autocue (and one of the redcoat's Welsh accents is execrable!) while at the other extreme the late, great military historian David Chandler is perhaps not at his best trying to ad lib to camera. However, he does have a fantastic moment demonstrating one of the infamous Isandhlawana ammunition boxes. Overall a worthy effort and you come away with a clear understanding of the campaign. It is much better than some of the later additions to this series.

No matter what your view of the Zulu Wars, it is a fascinating period of military history with heroic bravery on both sides, sides which differed so much in their approach to war but sides fighting for their nation.
A well-researched film, using well-known actors to narrate or read diary entries and other material, the DVD also contains extras.
Generally, it is a balanced assessment which would be a good addition for a student of the Zulu Wars or a good introduction for anyone beginning research or just trying to discover the history behind the film "Zulu".
