It is kind of hard to be objective about this book when you are one of the contributing artists whose work is featured on it (Page 180) but I can wholeheartedly say this: We all have very sick and twisted imaginations. Don't get me wrong, this is not a tasteless compilation of gory pictures nor an excuse to shock just for the thrill of shocking, mind you. The author, Allan Graves, obviously made a painstaking research of what he wanted to be featured in each page of this massive book and as you flip through it you'll feel anything but bored and that's the tricky part and the genius behind it.
I mean, the idea of artwork featuring undead characters doing that thing we all know they do could seem pretty dull if you are not careful enough but when you gather so many artists from all over the world, each masters of their own unique style and/or technique and let them cut loose to produce their definitive zombie picture the result is a compilation of the most unexpected artwork you can ever dream of. There's gore, humor, symbolism,(great)color and lack thereof, 3D renders, scale models, photography and yet the star of the book are not the artists but the subject itself :Zombies.
If there ever was a slight doubt of the universal appeal of the undead cannibals as part of our collective culture then this book grabs that doubt by the neck, rips it open and splashes it's guts all over while you feel cheerful, scared and excited all at once.
It is that good.
This is a must have not only for graphic art fans but for all of us who love zombies and the other few who love to hate them.
I think this is only the beginning.
