With 2013’s The Zodiac Sessions, fans of San Francisco-based heavy rock/doom metal band Orchid can now get their hands on the band’s 2011 debut album Capricorn as well as their 2009 EP Through the Devil’s Doorway – both of which were previously only available as pricey imports – in one package.
Musically, Orchid is about the most Sabbath-sounding of this whole wave of retro/stoner/heavy/doom revival bands. Chugging riffs, spooky vocals and lyrics and just a great retro vibe makes them one of the most enjoyable bands in the scene, even if they’re not terribly original.
The Zodiac Sessions features the debut full-length and the EP, newly remastered, in a decent looking (for a digipack at least) package with new artwork and liner notes. There isn’t any bonus material, but simply having these albums in hand is probably reason enough for most fans. The remastering is a nice bonus by itself. It’s probably geared more towards existing Orchid fans, though it does provide a good value for new fans looking to start at the beginning. Either way, it’s a nicely put together set.
