Product Description

(New American Library,1980)
“The best history of Zen ever written.”
Library Journal

Beginning with Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism it shows Zen as it was created by the personalities, perceptions, and actions of its masters over the centuries.

Gradual and sudden enlightenment, shock enlightenment, the koan, the migration of Zen to Japan. With anecdote and memorable quotation, this long-needed work restores Zen to its living, human form.

The truth of Zen has always resided in individual experience rather than in theoretical writings. To give the modern reader access to understanding of this truth, THE ZEN EXPERIENCE illumines Zen as it was created and shaped by the personalities, perceptions, and actions of its masters over the centuries.
Beginning with the twin roots of Zen in Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism, we follow it through its initial flowering in China under the First Patriarch Bodhidharma; its division into schools of “gradual” and “sudden” enlightenment under Shen-hsui and Shen-hui; the ushering in of its golden age by Hui-neng; the development of “shock” enlightenment by Ma-tsu; its poetic greatness in the person of Han-shan; the perfection of the use of the koan by Ta-hui; the migration of Zen to Japan and its extraordinary growth there under a succession of towering Japanese spiritual leaders.
Rich in historical background, vivid in revealing anecdote and memorable quotation, this long-needed work succeeds admirably in taking Zen from the library shelves and restoring its living, human form.

I read the above reviews and downloaded for free. Apart from the foreign dictionaries this is the first book I have deleted from the Kindle. I just could not read this. The font is too small and when enlarged the line spacing is to much. Pity as I was looking forward to read this.

An Excellent Read 14 Nov 2011

An absolute gem of a book. And it's free!

I have to admit, I sort of held that against it at first (if it's free how good can it be? but I was low on cash, wanted something to read and am interested in Zen Buddhism).

The book is a history of Buddhism in China and Japan. It should be required reading for any zen enthusiast. Starts off a bit slow but keep going. It's interesting, educational and thoroughly enjoyable.

I also intend to purchase the hard copy because I love the cover so much.

more than i wanted 28 Jan 2012

I'm digesting this one a little more slowly than I would have liked.

I thought I was getting a general overview of Zen and not a concise history text book. However the humor in it keeps me coming back to it. I Am studying all forms of Buddhism to help my clients. This is all you ever need to know about Zen and more. There are things in this reading that have brought flashes of insight. Not a fast read for me but a good read. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how Zen evolved and the way it can be practiced. Listed are the many monks that contributed to this evolution and their often strange and wonderful ways of helping people, "get it"

Incredible book 1 Jan 2012

This book is so good, I can't believe it's free! The whole history of Zen Buddhism is contained in it, told in a friendly style with lots of those typical Zen anecdotes. I would easily pay money for something this good! Thanks to the author for taking the time and effort to write it.

Zen is based on the recognition of two incompatible types of thought: rational and intuitive. "e;

That end is an intuitive realization of a single great insightthat we and the world around are one, both part of a larger encompassing absolute. Our rational intellect merely obscures this truth, and consequently we must shut it off, if only for a moment. Rationality constrains our mind; intuition releases it. "e;

"e;
The irony is that the person glimpsing this moment of higher consciousness, this Oneness, encounters the ultimate realization that there is nothing to realize. The world is still there, unchanged. But the difference is that it is now an extension of our consciousness, seen directly and not analytically. And since it is redundant to be attached to something already a part of you, there is a sudden sense of freedom from our agonizing bondage to things. "e;
