Book Description

13 Dec 2007 0415391997 978-0415391993

Though few now doubt the severity of the environmental problems faced by humanity there is still resistance from businesses, developers, architects, planners and government when it comes to making the step changes necessary to make our lifestyles sustainable.

Based on the experience gained from their involvement in the pioneering Beddington Zero Emission Development (or BedZED) in London, and subsequent innovative schemes, The ZEDbook authors present a bold, coherent and refreshing vision of a low carbon future.

In three comprehensive sections, The ZEDbook leads the reader from basic ZEDliving principles through building physics and architectural design details to a carefully selected array of informative case studies.

The ZEDbook is a must-have purchase for anyone wanting to make communities and the built environment more sustainable.

Review

"A remarkable achievement, both for the initiative it documents - probably the most comprehensive sustainable building system in the UK - and for being a reference manual as at home on the coffee table as it is on the study shelf."  Ecologist, April 2008

"This book is at once an instrumental manual and a testament; a roadmap to future success, but also, crucially, a laudable record of what has already been achieved." Ecologist, April 2008

About the Author

Bill Dunster formed Bill Dunster architects in 1998. In 2002 he completed the award winning BedZED (Beddington Zero Energy Development), the UK's largest carbon neutral eco-community. The architectural practice now has its own range of low carbon construction products – ZEDfabric – and has recently launched the RuralZED zero carbon self build house kit.

Craig Simmons is the co-founder and Technical Director of Best Foot Forward, one of Europe’s leading environmental consultancies. In 2005 the company was awarded a Queen’s Award for sustainability development. In 2000, Craig co-authored Sharing Nature’s Interest – the definitive book on ecological footprinting – and currently sits on the standards committee of the Global Footprint Network.

Bobby Gilbert is a mathematician and chartered engineer with 20 years’ experience in designing simulation and monitoring systems. He runs his own building physics consultancy and software development business which recently launched ‘Carbon Mixer’, a software tool already adopted by many local authorities and consultants. Bobby also teaches building physics and simulation on post-graduate courses.

Still one of the best and most accessible publications for transferring knowledge and experience from several 'proof of concept' and demonstration low carbon developments. Lots of professional value in scoping ideas on off-site manufacturing through to building physics that is understandable to non-experts or even custom-builders. Seems a very generous approach from the professional authors to share this level of detail, insight and nice graphics.

the ZEDbook is an great introduction to zero carbon architecture. Starting with the basics of climate change and peak oil it establishes limits of fuel consumption and then attempts to find solutions to satisfy these limits. It systematically reviews available technologies and materials including the obligatory renewable energy options, passive ventilation & heat exchangers. It goes on to look at farms, larger developments and even high rise buildings. Finally the book takes a critical look at case studies of existing developments and concepts.

While it is an easy read it is still full of information and is ideal as an on desk reference guide to the more common questions encountered in passive/zero carbon architecture.

The RIBA judges' citation for the winner of the Outstanding Professional Practice-located Research follows:
This award acknowledges the considerable contribution of Bill Dunster and the architectural practice ZEDFactory in drawing to the attention of practitioners the challenges of "zero energy" development. Theirs is a serious body of work well researched and documented, with the ideas having been refined constantly over the years. Their approach covers both building component and design output. As a summative product of this research The ZEDbook records about 10 years of development from "Bedzed" onwards looking at the building physics and the component elements of a range of projects. The ZEDbook is clearly written, well illustrated and referenced and allows the reader to dip in to specific subject areas. The book presents a body of work that has served the profession and the cause of sustainability extremely well.
