Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

With the release of The Young Knives Are Dead the late 70s are in vogue with the discerning British indie kid. Sparky, abrasive, politically aware, filled with jagged little rhythms that lead nowhere and twist back again, Oxford young bloods the Young Knives' debut album references both Kraftwerk and lifts a snippet from the Banana Splits theme in its opening song "Walking on the Autobahn". Second track borrows a title from The Jam ("English Rose") and begins with an old school nursery rhyme, carolling merrily to itself like a demented (early) Blur or less riff-concerned Supergrass. This is fantastic, fun stuff: a loveable, liveable hotchpotch of diverse styles and talents--Pavement, Pere Ubu, Comet Gain--beating with a fierce punk rock heart. --Everett True

Sort of Genius 19 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album after reading a slightly positive review in the NME solely on the basis that the bass player claims to be called The House of Lords. Somehow that seemed to convey the atmosphere of the band, and this on top of the reviews' use of the phrase 'spindly late seventies art rock' meant it had to be bought. I was not disappointed. On first listen the tracks 'Walking on the Autobahn', 'John' and the hilarious 'Working Hands' stood out. But all the tracks have good moments, and are blessed with some truly bizzare lyrics. I suppose they sound like a cross between the Strokes and Supergrass, but the album is really quite unique. I imagine that this band will either break up pretty soon or make a classic record. Either way, this is kind of a genius debut from the Oxford three-piece.

I had the privilige of seeing this band live at the truck festival yesterday and i have to say they were brilliant,i bought this e.p straight after and its well worth listening to. They offer something different to the indie scene and i can see them becoming a big success when their album is released in august. I reccomend getting to one of their gigs if they're playing near you as they are brilliant entertainers as well as great performers. Im now looking forward to hearing their album.

Just not that good 11 Oct 2011

I bought this to complete my Young Knives collection after purchasing their first two albums. The music on show here just isn't up to the standard of those two records. 'Walking on the Autobahn', 'John' and 'Grand Opening' are all decent songs but the rest of this is barely listenable. 'The Night of the Trees' is particularly awful, with some horrendous vocals in the chorus.

On the whole, I would recommend that you just stick to buying the actual albums, all three are much better than this EP.
