I bought this album after reading a slightly positive review in the NME solely on the basis that the bass player claims to be called The House of Lords. Somehow that seemed to convey the atmosphere of the band, and this on top of the reviews' use of the phrase 'spindly late seventies art rock' meant it had to be bought. I was not disappointed. On first listen the tracks 'Walking on the Autobahn', 'John' and the hilarious 'Working Hands' stood out. But all the tracks have good moments, and are blessed with some truly bizzare lyrics. I suppose they sound like a cross between the Strokes and Supergrass, but the album is really quite unique. I imagine that this band will either break up pretty soon or make a classic record. Either way, this is kind of a genius debut from the Oxford three-piece.
