Product Description

Product Description

This second part of a two-volume walking guide to the Yorkshire Dales offers 42 day walks and suggestions for longer treks in the north and east of the Dales National Park, including the Howgills, Mallerstang, Nidderdale, Wensleydale, Swaledale and Coverdale. Each valley has a character of its own, and this intimate and varied landscape harmonises, as nowhere else in the country, the work of nature and the hand of man. This guide takes you on an exploration of the dales and surrounding hills and moors among some of the most remarkable limestone landscape in the country, illustrated with OS mapping.

The Cicerone Walking Guides are a well known source of information for providing walk routes and details of the areas they cover. This edition for the North and the East of the Yorkshire Dales is no exception to the rule and is well written by Dennis and Jan Kesall based on their own local knowledge of the area. The guide in it's introduction covers the Dales landscape and its plant and wildlife and the influences on the land by human activitiy, history, and local geology and makes a good read on it's own. For the less than well prepared walker there is a useful section devoted to all the praticalities of a day's walk, so that all the routes covered can enjoyed with careful planning.
The walks contained are then placed into 5 areas; for example Part 1 covers the Howgill Fells, while Part 2 covers Mallerstang. Each of these parts then provide a number of walks that allow you experience the character of each of the fells or dales listed. The route descriptions are clear with any difficult sections noted, as are the reprinted extracts of OS maps; there are also some lovely photographs throughout taken by the authors, which add to both the quality and value of this guide.
Having now personally used some of the routes provided, during a recent weekend spent in Hawes, North Yorkshire, I encountered no difficulties in navigation or enjoyment and I cannot wait to explore the area again using this book as my companion.
A great little volume to carry in your rucksack and well worth the modest asking price.

This little book was very interesting and packed with useful info. There are so many walks described we will be visiting the Dales for many years to come. It also covers Nidderdale and areas just outside the Park, which is useful.
The only reason for 4 stars is the size of the book which though handy, is a bit smaller than I expected. Otherwise, its great.
