'The Yellow Room' elegantly combines a family mystery with a convincing depiction of life in rural Britain in the austere 1950s and in British Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising. Jessica, the central character in the modern day sequences, is sympathetically portrayed, and the mystery she wishes to solve, though easy for the reader to decipher, has some delicate twists and turns. While not a full-blown action story, there are deaths, disappearances and a dark hint of insanity. But the real strength of the book lies in the parts set in the 1950s, which conjure up a lost world of class divisions, imperialism and stiff upper lips. The country house at the centre of the story is evoked deftly: I could feel the chill and damp, and smell the autumnal wood smoke. Christopher Bowden's style is fluent and literate, without being self-indulgent or clever-clever. I would recommend this book, especially to anyone who has enjoyed Michael Frayn's 'Spies'.

Perfect of its Kind 19 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Over all The Yellow Room is an intriguing novel of books and houses and families, which makes English and colonial Kenyan mid-twentieth century social history utterly fascinating. There's a quote of praise on the front from Julian Fellowes and I am sure anyone captivated by Gosford Park or Downton Abbey will thoroughly enjoy Christopher Bowden's book. I love books focused on buildings, The Franchise Affair comes straight to mind, and The Yellow Room is up there with the best of them.

After Christopher Bowdens first book, the only thing predictable is the title - what else would follow a Blue Book? The story captured 1950's England, and is deftly told. Had the usual mark of the compulsive read - once in, the only way was out through the end of the story. The bits left hanging, the remaining mystery, only add to a most enjoyable read.
