Book Description

5 Mar 2009

The Years of the Locust is a true story of intrigue, paranoia, murder and money set in the shimmering cities of America's South in the 1990s. It's the story of two men who never should have met, and when they did, one killed the other. There are walk-on parts for Don King, George Foreman, the FBI and a fallen NFL hero, yet it's the two central characters - sociopathic door-to-door-sales-king-turned-boxing-promoter Rick 'Elvis' Parker and his loyal, naive and ultimately incorruptible fighter Tim Anderson - that make this story extraordinary and unforgettable.

It would be impossible to invent a man like Rick Parker, a freakishly fat ginger-haired giant who modelled his personal style on Elvis Presley and wanted to become the next Don King. Don himself told Rick how to do it - find a white man who could become the heavyweight champion of the world. Then Rick met Tim Anderson, a handsome, funny former baseball pro - was he the fighter to take Parker all the way? Rick left a trail of fixed fights and violent mayhem all across the South, but his dream stayed out of reach. By the end of his reign of terror Tim would be broke, poisoned and facing the hardest choice of all. And now Tim is doing life without parole in a state prison, and Rick - well, Rick's dead.

By juxtaposing the lives of these two extraordinary men, The Years of the Locust turns a remarkable, riotous true-crime story into a profound examination of chance, choices and remorse - one that's scary, sad and blackly, bleakly funny.

Review

"The Years of the Locust is criminally good...Jon Hotten charts the corruption and shattered lives this low-rent Machiavelli left in his wake in this gripping look at the dark heart of the noble art" (Metro )

"Hotten tells a terrific story, a real-life tale that will appeal to anyone who enjoys the darkly comic Florida-based thrillers of Carl Hiaasan" (Daily Telegraph )

"A brilliant feat of research and reportage" (Independent on Sunday )

"The Years of the Locust stands in the tradition of great boxing writing" (Soctland on Sunday )

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing real life story 7 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is about the worst corruption possible in boxing circles. It is so compelling and even more sad because there are no doubt, still people out there right now exploiting boxers in the same way.
Even if you are not a boxing fan this book will have you gripped. It is truly in the "can't put it down" category.
I am a slow reader and I can easily put a book down for months before finally revisiting it to read to the end. This book however I read in 3 quick spells during 3 short flights.
There is a helpful glossary of the main characters in the front of the book as there are a lot of names that most readers will not be familiar with.
Buy it. Read it.

I grew up learning about and loving boxing during the era of boxing covered in this book and it brought me back to that era. This is a book for boxing fans, mystery fans, and any fan of a good human interest story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read anything at all because it has it all.
4.0 out of 5 stars blood money in the naked eye universe 13 Aug 2012

I bought this book because it has many references about my husband. He is the man that referreed the "famous" fight where Tim was poisoned. My husband was included, talked about, quoted and defamed without any contact or permission to even be mentioned in this book. We have since contacted the author and gave his side of the story....The book is a good book and does reveal the truth about the underbelly of boxing(and should open your eyes to probably any other sport). The main thing I got from this book is that everyone has their own opinion of the "truth" and if telling the truth is going to get you indicted by the F.B.I. then most of the people that had something to lose did not tell the truth. If you are a huge boxing fan this book will probably bring dissappointment to what actually goes on behind closed doors and all those "Wow" moments you thought were real?, well sadly they were probably just shows put on by people with fake names just to sell tickets or further someone else's career. Don't get me wrong, these guys really get hit and they bleed real blood, but the blood they bleed is just for money...blood money
5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Gem 14 May 2012
By Daire O'Reilly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I had heard nothing about this book nor its author but ultimately a very pleasant surprise. A nice short and punchy narrative style and very well crafted characters. It is, like the best boxing stories, a morality tale full of hookers and coke and the horrid ambition of horrid people. Anyway, even if you are not a fan of boxing but are looking for something that pushes the boundaries of reportage, you will not go wrong with the Year of the Locust.
