3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this book 5 July 2013
By Cary - Published on

Alternate history with dragons & steampunk, Mostly set in the China of the Boxer rebellion and (especially) Japan before it was truly open to the west. Very well drawn history. Problems for me in too many points of view, with the change of viewpoint happening so fast (sometimes just a page or less) that it was hard to keep track. Maybe because it's hard to look back to see "who is this again?' on a Kindle, I had trouble with the view changes even when it was to characters I "knew".
One other thing, this is NOT 4 books. Book one is all introduction, to the world, the history where Wales beats England, and the idea of the dragons' place in society. A school bully is introduced (who shows up in later books), etc. In Book 2 the story gets going as the boy hero gets to the Japan surrogate. I hope book 4 has an actual ending, but neither 1 nor 2 even pretends to. These are chapters, not books. (Not a problem as sold together, but it makes for one very long story.) I got through about half of book 3 before I gave up, because I still couldn't keep up with the point of view changes and new characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars a Confusing Story 28 Sep 2013
By Clovelle McKelvey - Published on

While the story was intriguing, It was often difficult to follow and confusing. I found that it skipped around from storyline to storyline without really tying it all together. There are many stories and questions that went unanswered in the four books. Missing people whose stories remained silent. Unless there will be books five through eight to tie it all into a neat bundle, don't bother to read these. It has been a waste of a week for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars No dragons so far 13 Jan 2014
By R. Perloff - Published on

I purchased The Year of the Dragon, Books 1-4 Bundle looking for a set of stories with and about dragons. After brief mentions of dragons, the rest of the book was devoted to feudal Japanese traditions and persons. Gave up about 3/4 of the way through first book. If you're looking for dragons, I don't think this is the series for you

3.0 out of 5 stars Left hanging! 3 Dec 2013
By Irene Kennedy - Published on

I enjoyed the world that Calbraith created. The oriental flavor added an unique mystery to the story. Alas, the conclusion to the story left me hanging in the air. So many questions unanswered. It seems as if Calbraith ran out of wind to finish it. I look forward to the author finishing the story!

Even though the plot was like following breadcrumbs in an aviary; I loved the characters and sloughed through to be left hanging! Is there another book coming? What is going on?
