5.0 out of 5 stars Can't fault it 25 May 2014

I've had this in paper copy for some years and was delighted to find it as a freebie download recently.

It's succinct, intelligent, informed and entertaining. Full of amusing detail, but also filled with fact and I've enjoyed re reading it on kindle as much as I did first time round in hard copy. Austria is so much more than one country with a few mountains a bit of musical history and a liking for coffee and pastries. This little tome gets under that skin and let's the reader see the reality of a multi cultural country, influenced by invasion and war and one which retains a singular identity.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amusing and trueful account 24 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having lived in Austria I recognise many of the traits mentioned in the book. I wonder whether the Austrians will be quite so amused but I found it very funny.

An amusing rib-tickling read, where some keen observations, ring true to those who have spent time in Austria. It requires considerable skill to give a balanced version of the truth without giving offence ... this book succeeds.

4.0 out of 5 stars All the essentials to understand the Austrians 13 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is my 10th book in the Xenophobe's guide series, and it might well be the best I have read so far. Most of the content is really interesting and I didn't detect any blatant mistake or nonsense as in some other books (France, Japan). I decided not to give five stars to any book in this series though because 86 pages really is too short.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent little book 26 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Louis James really knows his stuff. This is an excellent little book, knowledgeable, full of insights, and wittily entertaining without being condescending in any way. I know Austria and the Austrians well, and cannot fault this at all. I ended up wishing for more, but brevity is the soul of wit, after all! Brilliant.
