Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you've gone beyond thinking that XML is just another buzzword, you're going to need something to help you start creating your first XML documents. This is not that book. However, if you're a serious XML developer wanting a single volume complete reference then this is just the book for you.

XML is not as simple as the hype tries to make you believe and The XML Companion takes a quick step through its history and concepts, before diving off into the depths of entities and DTDs. Bradley also goes into the more complex concepts behind the creation of XML documents and explores how you model, design and manage document structures. You'll also learn how to process XML data in your applications, as well as using XSL and XSLT to format and display XML data. Of course, something as complex as XML needs programming tools and you'll also find code samples and ideas for how to use XML's document model and programming APIs. --Simon Bisson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Building on the success of the first and second editions of The XML Companion, Neil Bradley has up-dated this accessible, in-depth reference to cover many of the new supporting standards that have emerged since XML was released in 1998. Apart from the core chapters on the XML standard itself, this book concentrates on related standards developed by the W3C and on the two most popular applications of this technology: document publishing and data exchange.  The XML Companion
  • Provides accessible, comprehensive description of each XML feature
  • Does not assume experience of HTML or SGML
  • Detailed study of the standard is supported by the inclusion of cross-referenced ‘roadmaps’ of the building blocks that comprise the standard.
  • Includes an extensive glossary
  • Related standards for cataloguing, processing, linking and styling XML are covered in detail.

Of all my XML books this is the one I have on my desk every day, when I need the answer quickly and accurately.

Its scope is the entire family of XML related specifications and all the other topics you need to know about, such as character sets. It gives good examples while explaining the underlying principles and basis.

The book is intended as a companion, which it does well. This makes it completely unsuitable as a tutorial.

I found this book hard to understand and difficult to use as a reference. I would not recommend it - not enough examples to make the points raised clear.

This book possibly deserves 5 crowns, not the 1 I gave it,but it is quite definitely not for newcomers to XML. Thus I guess the cover text is at fault rather than the book itself. I can imagine The XML Companion being a very useful reference for someone who either knows SGML well or who has got to grips with XML via some other source.
