Having the X-files meet 30 days of night is an excellent idea, and having someone with knowledge of both series working on them was an absolute treat. In many title crossovers, something is lost in the translation, be it pieces that make the character feel right or the way the story plot moves. Luckily, all the pieces in this work well.
I am not going to go over the what, exactly, because I do not want to give away anything that could be taken from the original 30 Days of Night. If you have not read it, stop here and go and pick it up. If you are a fan of the series, however, you can see the idea of the boat come into play and you can grab places and events and almost make them fit into the "what" transpiring in Barrow. I really liked that, and i liked the fact that my two favorite agents are the ones discovering everything.
The one thing I really feared was losing the Mulder and Scully feel as banter is exchanged, but that fear vanished early. I also feared losing that 30 Days feeling and the violence that you get with this kind of terrible, but it stayed as well and reared its head almost from the go. You have an artwork connection as well, and you can tell who is doing this title. Its really good stuff.
I dont think you have to be a fan of either to enjoy this, but it did make it nice. I miss X-files a lot and the old Topps reissues (by Wildstorm) didn't really give me my complete fix. I also miss the fact that 30 Days of Night stopped doing Barrow tales with meaning, and had drifted into a "the vampires attack again" kind of mindset. This allows you to revisit Barrow but not be bored by it, fleshing out some details.
It really is good stuff, taking being a fan out of the equation. Check out some of the samples, you might like what you see - just dont look too long or it might destroy some plot point.
