Book Description

2011
His name is Farden. They whisper that he’s dangerous. Dangerous is only the half of it. Something has gone missing from the libraries of Arfell. Something very old, and something very powerful. Five scholars are now dead, a country is once again on the brink of war, and the magick council is running out of time and options. Entangled in a web of lies and politics and dragged halfway across icy Emaneska and back, Farden must unearth a secret even he doesn’t want to know, a secret that will shake the foundations of his world. Dragons, drugs, magick, death, and the deepest of betrayals await. Breathtakingly vast, chillingly dark, brooding and dangerous, The Written will leave you impatiently waiting for the next adventure… Welcome to Emaneska. THE WRITTEN is the first book in the thrilling and fast-paced Emaneska Series and the debut book of Ben Galley, a young author from the UK. The eagerly-awaited sequel and second in the series, PALE KINGS, is due for release in 2012. If you would like to know more about either of these books, or more about Ben, then you can find it all at www.bengalley.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Debut 28 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback
Excellent! A powerful and well-written debut.

Farden is a Written, a Mage who exists to serve the Arka and its surrounding areas. After a tragedy and a horrific betrayal, he finds himself becoming weaker and weaker at the hands of a very evil man indeed. How will Farden get out of it?

Finding his strength coming from an unexpected source, Farden battles his daemons, external and internal alike, and finds out just how strong he can truly be.

This fantasy has everything, epic battles and fights, magic of many sorts, kings and princesses, dragons, vampires, and twists you would just never see coming. I see a really bright future for Galley and am going to try to read everything he rights. Super enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Big potential, let down by execution 4 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I normally don't accept self-published novels for review for all the usual reasons given, but the most important one is time. With work, the girls, and Wiebe, my reading and blogging time is limited and if I'm going to read and review something do I want to risk reading a lot of not so good books to find that one gem or stick with non-self-published work and run less of a risk that at least the writing is up to scratch? I chose to go with the latter even though I realise I might miss out on some really good books that way. So you might be surprised to find me reviewing The Written by Ben Galley, which is a self-published book. However, I'd seen some good reviews of his work though and read an interesting interview with him on Mark Lawrence's blog, so when Ben approached me to review his work, I decided to take a leap and say yes. And on the whole I'm glad I did. The Written being Galley's debut novel there are some first novel mistakes, I had some issues with the writing that are completely an issue of taste, and there is one problem with his female characters that really bothered me, but in essence The Written is a good story and one I mostly enjoyed.

So what were those first novel mistakes? First of all, there is a lot of head-hopping going on, sometimes within the same paragraph, which often forced me to go back and reread the last few lines to figure where exactly the switch took place. There's a similar problem with dialogue, which made it unclear who was speaking. Secondly, at times his prose felt a little purple, though I'd say it was more lavender than purple actually. Galley often employed quantifiers or descriptors where to me they seemed unnecessary, which when eliminated would have made for a tighter narrative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book from a talented new author 6 Oct 2012
By IPS

Highly enjoyable fantasy romp in the Gemmell/Cornwell mould. I met Ben Galley doing promotion in the Nottingham Waterstones. Jolly nice chap, and kudos for self publishing and getting his ideas out there. The author's website at bengalley.com is well worth a visit, especially if you are an aspiring writer looking at self publishing. This introduction to the world of Emaneska is gripping and well paced and should please fans of the dark fantasy genre. Looking forward to reading the sequel Pale Kings now!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic! 25 Jun 2012

I couldn't put this book down, it's definitely one of the best books I have read in a very long time. From the amazing artwork on the cover to the very last page, this book does not disappoint. Ben uses language beautifully to bring the imaginative plot and characters alive. Farden is a brilliant main character with a slightly dark side, who I found myself really caring about. It's a real page turner with twists and turns to keep the reader interested. I love the world that Ben has created. I feel really passionate about this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, I'm afraid. 9 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kudos to Ben for getting his work out there largely through his own efforts. His fantasy setting has got some interesting ideas, and the characters and plot have potential.

Unfortunately - I'm sorry, this is going to sound a bit horrible, but it's really poorly written. Sentences that don't flow, words used inappropriately, repetition, typos... Ben needs to develop the craft to match his vision. Possibly also to get an editor on board while he does it. At the moment I'm stalled partway through the book, and can't recommend it, which is a shame.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good first book 27 May 2013
By Pat
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this story, admittedly there were a few flaws with some of the dialogue and structure but overall a very good read and a cracking first book. Fair play to Ben for self-publishing this.
I have just bought the second in this series and am looking forward to reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good first novel 17 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In general I see that a book has dragons and go oh no not another dragon book! The dragons are in this book but they aren't the most important part of the book. The hero is a magician and fighter and all round grumpy so and so. He fights because it is his duty and job and because he enjoys it.

A lot of this book is unexplained. Why the vampire is allowed to go around killing people for example. A lot of the background is generic with the only real departures from norm being the tattoo that gives our hero most of his magical strength and the tear book that holds the memories of the dragon.

Overall this book was very readable and the main character interesting enough to want to find out more about. The villain was a little too much the pantomime villain with little explanation as to why he behaved as he did. I'll probably buy the next book.
