Once again, my gripe is not with Spares work, which is brilliant (and completely sucks you in if you pay attention to it).

This book is basically a copy and paste job from the net, except the images look like they were resized down in Microsoft Word, and a couple of hundred typos thrown in. They clearly did not even reread this when they typed it up.

Reading Spare means every word counts, his stuff is extremely condensed, a typo can throw off the whole meaning of the sentence.

I bought it knowing this, but didn't think it would be THIS bad. This publishing company are just a bunch of chancers and profiteers.

Mediocre printing 23 Nov. 2008
By Theodore Cook - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
AO Spare's writing is as great as ever, but the various editing/printing errors (including some really glaring ones like the same section repeated three times in a row!) make this a book only marginally worth purchasing.

Extremely Poor Printing Quality on Illustrations 2 Aug. 2008
By C. Evans - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have not gotten a chance to read the whole of the this book yet and am not disappointed with any textual content but am seriously disappointed with the reproduction of the illustrations especially on the automatic drawing section. I own a copy of The Book Of Automatic Drawing published by IHO and the same illustrations are printed incomparably better. The quality of the printing is almost downright lazy and the pictures in this section are on the verge of incoherency. This copy is decent for those who are mainly interested in his writings but will disappoint fans of his art and illustration will be seriously disappointed by the quality.

Wasted effort!!! 17 Dec. 2010
By S. M. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
There is a lot of good that can be said for the works of Austin Spare, and even more so when accompanied by his artwork. However, this is such a shabby production as to warrant the most brutal criticism possible. The text was evidently edited by a chimpanzee on crack, and the pictures reproduced with a half broken Xerox machine run by a junkie.

If you want to read Spare, and I think his work would be beneficial to many, take the extra time and cost and order the editions from mandrake-press.co.uk. They may cost more, but they are beautifully rendered and quality editions.

The Grandfather of Chaos Magic 26 Oct. 2011
By Dgarcia72 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The Writings of Austin Osman Spare is an interesting collection. Many of Mr. Spare's work comes across as being purposefully obscure. Reading this and considering that Peter Carroll (Liber Null and Psychonaut) and Phil Hine (Condensed Chaos) have come to Spare's writings as the basis for the Chaos Magic system adds a level of interest to Spare; who I might otherwise have dismissed as unimportant. In an interview I read, Carroll mentions that Spare's writings are the only books he keeps because he is continually going back to them and uncovering here to fore unseen levels of meaning. In my first reading of Spare's work I have to admit that I found little to no meaning, which merely points to the fact that I am not prepared for it yet - so I will reread Mr. Spare's concepts and thoughts, all the while keeping in mind that Spare and Crowley broke company allegedly because Spare's ideas and Crowley's ideas didn't jive.

A note about the physical quality of the book itself: One of the main reasons I gave this book three stars rather than a higher rating has much to do with the quality of the book itself. This is a print-on-demand book; a bunch of photocopies (prepared for print on a desktop computer) perfect bound with a glossy cover... not the nicest looking book around, but it's really the contents that matter more than the appearance, right? A tip of the hat to NuVision Publications LLC. for keeping these writings available.

Awful copy 8 Sept. 2013
By kiki wanderer - Published on Amazon.com

AOS's works are well-known and vibrant pieces. The scanning or whatever they did to put them in this format is awful. Not only is it difficult to read, but it is rife with typos, missing punctuation, and words that have been mutilated.
