An excellent resource 14 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
It's very hard not to compare The Writer's Handbook with its arch rival across the road, but speaking as a 20+ times published non-fiction author I have a copy of both in my office and often find their information complementary. You probably could make do with one or the other, but if you're serious about your writing, have the two; they both contain priceless information. And I'm looking forward to seeing how WH develops its online presence in the coming months, too.

Perspective: I am the published author of 35 non fiction books, who has tried to break into fiction with only the occasional short story breakthrough.

As a regular buyer of Writers' & Artists Yearbook, I did not expect any alternative would prove more useful.
I was wrong.

Despite generally better reviews for W&A, I found the 2011 edition of Writer's handbook 2011 superior in terms of contacts. Both in terms of information given and some publishers missing from W&A that were promising in 2011 Handbook.

The general advice is to buy both of you are serious about breaking into a new field, or a novice.

I have seen criticism of Handbook's features versus W&A. That may well be true over a single edition, but I found W&A, in their 104th year of publication, is the more complacent of the two. W&A is prone to repetition of earlier edition texts and information.

However, if its sheer number of pages you are after, W&A plays822 versus Handbook's 786.
Trouble is, I'm not convinced the quality of research and updates is superior.

Sadly, you probably do need to buy both [Amazon bundle prices helped me in that decision]..But only for 1 year on present W& A form...

This is very much down to personal preference. The articles in this book are few in number and not wildly helpful. I have no vested interest, just prefer the W&A yearbook, which I've bought previously and which has better articles. The listings are the same regardless, but for the same money you may as well get the one with the better articles. That said the online facility is useful but could be really developed - for example, to include a 'save list' for agents / publishers of personal interest. This facility could lure me away from W&A yearbook.
