3.0 out of 5 stars Self-help for scribblers 9 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Writer's Adventure Guide is a pretty typical self-help book. Take some fairly common advice and then tie it onto on unrelated structure, creating the illusion of insight when you've actually just caused mild confusion. The structure on this one is that of The Hero's Journey, using the twelve steps required to develop your protagonist and applying them to the actual writer. It's fine and most of the advice is fairly sound, but it tries to crowbar too much into the central conceit. Also, the author is way to fond of getting you to do checklists and draw up charts, which everyone knows is one of the main procrastination techniques used by writers. At one point in the book, you're asked to scribble down a list of twenty ways in which writer's block affects you. Twenty. Not only is this a massive waste of time, but imagine what a loser you'd feel if you suffered an attacking of writer's block halfway through?

1.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not a "writing your book" book 30 Aug 2011
By M. E. McCombs - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book based on other reviews both here and on other sites; however, the reviews do not accurately reflect the content of the book. Neither does the title. This book is a more a self-actualization/self-help book then a writing book. The exercises focus on finding your goals, yourself and your style with only five steps actually related to book writing and those are 'pre-writing' exercises. I am greatly disappointed in the book and glad I only spent $3.99 for a Kindle copy rather than purchasing the paperback edition.

Using the mythic story structure as her model, Beth Barany has crafted 12 concise steps to get you through the preparation, writing, and completion phases of your novel. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful plan for writers 26 Dec 2012
By Kelly C - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ms. Barany does a fantastic job on instructing writers. She explains everything very clearly, and she has broken down the entire process into twelve week-long increments. There are writing exercises for you to complete, and she encourages you to email her about your progress.
By reading and re-reading this extremely helpful book over and over again, I feel that my writing has greatly improved, making writing my novel much easier and quicker. If you are an aspiring novelist, then this book is most definitely for you.
