A hugely entertaining story with wonderful illustrations, too. (Julia Eccleshare Lovereading4Kids)

About the Author

Jill Murphy was born in London in 1949. From a very early age she was drawing and writing stories, and was already putting books together (literally, with a stapler) by the time she was six. She went on to study at Chelsea, Croydon and Camberwell Schools of Art. Jill worked in a children's home for four years and as a nanny for a year, before becoming a freelance writer and illustrator. The Worst Witch stories, of which this is the seventh, are some of Puffin's most successful titles.

The worst witch was the first book I learnt to read and the first one was published in 1974 and next year will be forty years. I love these books and they are still going strong, Jill Murphy is an incredible writer and illustrator and the characters have developed a lot in this book. It is definitley the best book of the series. Jill Murphy is going to continue to do these books as they continue to be popular.

A great book and even though I am an adult I still have a soft spot for these books.

A trip down Memory Lane. Good old Mildred and the gang are all still there, still the same characters, friendships and rivalries, problems and solutions. As an adult I will never get the enjoyment out of this I would have as an 8-year-old, but the nostalgia trip was a pleasant one.

In the latest Mildred Hubble story, the girls are now 4th years with duties, and after wishing on a star, Mildred gets her wish. A stray dog! Can she keep the loveable pup hidden from Miss Hardbroom? And with all the talk of an inter-school competition to win a swimming pool, surely the accident-prone Mildred is bound to cause a disaster...

Adults will see the plot turns a mile away, but it's not for us, is it? A perfectly lovely and safe addition to the series, with Murphy's excellent illustrations as always peppering the text. They won't be disappointed.

I would defenatly recommend this book to other people. perfect for under 8s. capturing the essence of magic, the worst witch provides great reading criteria and as the most recent book of the series, the worst witch and the wishing star gripped me throughout. I just couldn't put it down!

Jill Murphy manages to keep Mildred as the same incredible character through all her books despite the years passing. She creates new plots and the illustrations just get better. A great book for kids confidence. I loved this new book and eagerly look forward to another.
