Book Description

The Worst Jobs in History takes you back to the days when being a kid was no excuse for getting out of hard labour. This book tells the stories of all the children whose work fed the nation, kept trains running, and put clothes on everyone’s backs, over the last few hundred years of Britain’s history. No longer will you have to listen to your parents, grandparents, uncles, neighbours, and random old people in the Co-op telling you how much harder they had it in their day. Next time you find yourself in that situation, ask them if they were a jigger-turner or a turnip-picker in their young day. No? An orderly boy, perhaps? A stepper? Maybe they spent their weekends making matchboxes? Still no? Then they have no idea about the real meaning of hard work. With profiles and testimonies of real kids in rotten jobs, this book will tell you things you probably didn’t want to know about the back-breaking, puke-inducing reality of being a child in the past.

A really great book 23 Nov 2005
Format:Hardcover
This book is a really good read from cover to cover. Whilst it is written primarily for children, it appeals to all ages. It makes learning about historical children's jobs really fun. Each job has a 'Job Score' which summarises how awful the job was. Some really fascinating asides, which really give a fuller background. A very well-worth present for children and adults alike. A real bargin and good find if you ask me!

By Isis TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
"The Worst Children's Jobs in History" is the children's companion book to Tony Robinson's adult book "The Worst Jobs in History", both of which are formed from his television series of the same name. The book is very obviously targeted at children, using an A4 size as opposed to the standard paperback A5 sizing, larger font, lots of colourful illustrations, and indeed many of the comments within are directed towards a child reader. The book is also only 104 pages long, and only features the jobs from the television series which were done by children and teenagers. However, adults will want to read this book too, and should find it an easy and enjoyable read. The job summaries are very brief, no longer than five paragraphs but at the shortest they can consist of a single short paragraph. This is just the right length for children, although as an adult I craved more detail. The job summaries also include a summing up job score which allows for easier comparison between jobs, and roughly compares the danger, filth, hard slog, boredom, cash and glamour involved, to help you determine what was truly the worst job of all. In addition there are some extras, such as a list of the full day's duties of a Victorian housemaid, how-to guides, and a "what happened when" round up at the end of each chapter.

An easy yet educational read, engaging the interest, and the sparse detail is not an issue given the book's target reader.

Tony Robinson has to be one of the best presenters on television, with Time Team and Worst Jobs in History, now he brings his own inimitable style to the written word. In this book, he details the many, many unpleasant jobs that children had to do in the years gone by. His research is astounding and you can feel yourself drawn into the era and situation of the times. What he reveals will amaze the reader and one is left wondering at the terrible existence that the poor children had to endure. Tony does not attempt to gloss over the details, but he still does it in his entertaining way that compels you to keep reading. Definitely a bit shocking, but most enlightening. Every teenager should be made to read it.
