3.0 out of 5 stars They're not ALL Stupid, 10 Aug 2009

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The World's Stupidest Last Words (Paperback)
The title of this book is a bit of a misnomer since some of the valedictories celebrated here are anything but stupid. Sure some of them are plain silly. The classic "They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist-..." is quoted as a prime example of overweening confidence swiftly put in its place. The attribution in this case suggests that the quote may be apocryphal; here its origin is cited as an American Civil War General whereas elsewhere I have heard it attributed to a British General on campaign in the Sudan.

Whilst there is much here to afford the reader some amusing schadenfreude there are also many quotes which one can admire not only for their wit and intelligence but also for the courage of the author. My personal favourite in this regard is Voltaire being asked on his death bed to renounce Satan and replying, "This is no time to be making enemies".

In all an amusing little work to dip into (car fodder again), but beware it will not last you long. With a mere 128 pages and an average of 3 quotes per page it can be polished off very quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant bit of diversion., 3 Feb 2010

This review is from: The World's Stupidest Last Words (Paperback)
This is a superb little book which has provided me and the family with plenty of laughs. The fact that it cost me next to nothing is a bonus. My favourite was the one from Franco on his death bed. his attendant said to him that one of his generals was here to say goodbye, Franco asked if the general was going on vacation. Like the previous reviewer said, they are not all stupid but there are some brilliant and inspired ones in here.

I just hope I can think of something when the time comes.
