The volume includes the 19 sites added to the List by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in June 2013, including Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (Germany), Red Bay Basque Whaling Station (Canada) and Golestan Palace (Iran).

• Descriptions of all 981 UNESCO World Heritage sites
• Location map for every site
• Over 650 colour photographs

Background
The World Heritage List includes properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. In 1972 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of the World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage. Since then, 981 sites in 160 countries have been inscribed onto the list, 759 of which are cultural, 193 natural and 29 mixed properties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book and very informative 8 July 2014

I bought this for my Mother in the hope that she would choose more dangerous places for her holidays with a view that she would suffer a mishap before she spent all my inheritance. Unfortunately the book is so good and the places so well researched she has managed to come back on every occasion and in the process of working through the places, she has spent virtually her entire savings. She has a huge amount of Air Miles now though, and we are currently trying to negotiate use of these as payment for Nursing home fees. A splendid book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference of sites 1 May 2014

Personally, I wish there was a photo for each site and think it would be better organised in alphabetical order (of sites) with a summary section on the order the site was included as a WHS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Places you should visit in your life! 18 Mar 2014
By Pichierri Fabio - Published on Amazon.com
The World's Heritage guide (3rd edition, Feb. 2014) lists all the cultural and natural sites that received special status by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). These are places or monuments of unique and irreplaceable cultural and historical value and beauty for the whole of humanity that should be protected and cherished by any human being. So far I visited around twenty of them, a small fraction of the 981 sites contained inside this guide! Note that the list is growing year by year; for example, the 2012 edition contained 936 sites while the 2010 edition had 911 sites listed in it. Such sites are under constant threat either by wars or by the elements (the information on the state of each site is updated, although the most recent information can be obtained from the UNESCO home-page). The guide provides geographic information about the location of each site and most sites are displayed with excellent pictures. So, when planning a cultural trip, this guide will offer you great help in selecting a suitable place for your visit. If you are not traveling, on the other hand, upon consulting it you will gain a stronger respect for Nature and appreciate what humanity has achieved so far.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Traveler's Bible 14 May 2014

Look, with the world becoming a much smaller planet through technology, it becomes harder and harder to find top-tier places to visit that have not been over-commercialized or ruined because they have been tweeted every ten seconds. The UNESCO program provides a great service as it has found the best thousand sites across the globe. Even at first glance if some of these places do not appear appealing one gathers a strong appreciation for them once making the effort to get there. I sat down and reviewed the latest list and found that we have been to 75 (less than 10%) of the chosen sites - and we are well-travelled!!! So if you fancy yourself a traveler and curious by nature this is a great reference guide. If you are a close-minded American (I'm American so I can say this) and think that Disneyland, a Bahamas cruise or anywhere that has a McDonald's are dream destinations don't even bother. Funny, I think the United Nations is somewhat of a joke organization but they really got this program in good shape by their selections. Read the book if you don't believe me.

What a fantastic book. Don't bother buying "1000 places to visit before you die". This is the book you need!
