Book Description

1 Mar 2012

Best-selling guide to all 936 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Fully updated to include the latest sites added to the list in June 2011. The list is managed by the World Heritage Committee with strict criteria, and only the world’s most spectacular and extraordinary sites make it onto the list.

The prestigious list includes some of the most famous places in the world, such as the ancient Nabatean city of Petra in Jordan, the legendary Acropolis in Athens, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and Machu Picchu, the ‘Lost City of the Incas’, in Peru.

The volume includes the 25 sites added to the List by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in June 2011, including The Persian Garden (Iran), Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia (Colombia), Selimiye Mosque Complex at Edirne (Turkey) and Citadel of the Ho Dynasty (Vietnam).

• Over 650 colour photographs
• Descriptions of all 936 UNESCO World Heritage sites
• Location map for every site

Background
The World Heritage List includes properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. In 1972 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of the World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage. Since then, 936 sites in 153 countries have been inscribed onto the list, 725 of which are cultural, 183 natural and 28 mixed properties.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good enough 16 July 2012
By Andrew
I was given this book as a birthday present but it is poorly compiled and full of errors and typos. For example, page 31 has a photograph that says Wawel Cathedral but it is in fact St Mary's Basilica. Although they are both in Krakow they are about a kilometre apart and nothing like each other. For me this throws into doubt photos of all the places I am not familiar with. There is no excuse in this day and age for releasing inaccurate information especially when you are an organisation with the resources and prestige as UNESCO.

This book is a factual listing of the Unesco World Heritage sites up to and including 2011.
It sorts the locations in order of the date in which they were added to the list, and has the reasoning for them being on the list alongside key information about the places with great photos of most of them.

If you enjoy visiting cultural sites whilst travelling, this is the perfect book for inspiring your next trip. The continental maps show how many sites are in each region and help you quickly find the correct pages to review in the book. To be honest though, the UNESCO website also lets you do this with as much information on it.

It makes a great gift as it is visually stunning, looks expensive and well made and is full of useful facts and information for friends who like to travel and see these sites.
I've been to 15 of the sites around the globe and the information about the ones I have been to has been spot on and made me want to visit more.

I bought this book as a present for someone who loves travelling. I thought it would be a coffee table type of book, but he loves reading it so much that he carries it around with him even given it's size. Beautiful pictures and interesting information on each place.
