Memories 2 July 2004
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album (on vinyl) as a present for my mother in the late 60s. I soon became a firm fan of Sinatra. He is just beyond compare - so much better than anyone of the same genre. This album has some great contrasts - big band numbers to intimate bluesy songs. Its a nice collection of songs on Sinatra's own label. Better than the compilation albums that seem to be everywhere right now.

Highly recommended - I wonder how much the vinyl version is worth - I have to admit keeping it for myself!!

SINATRA THE HIT MAKER 23 Mar 2010
By ROMAN
Format:Audio CD
THREE CHART HITS INCLUDING 'SOMETHIN' STUPID' WITH DAUGHTER NANCY HEADLINE THIS 1967 PACKAGE FROM FRANK SINATRA. THE OTHER TWO ARE 'THIS TOWN' A FUNKY UPDATE OF 'SUMMER WIND' AND 'THE WORLD WE KNEW' - FOR WHICH I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A SOFT SPOT. HOWEVER, ONLY AVERAGE VERSIONS OF 'BORN FREE', 'THIS IS MY SONG' AND A RAUCOUS 'SOME ENCHANTED EVENING' RATHER DRAG DOWN THE QUALITY. THE LESS SAID ABOUT 'DON'T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY' THE BETTER (ONLY MY OPINION). THE ALBUM IS RESCUED BY TWO SUPERB SONGS. 'YOU ARE THERE' THE HAUNTING THEME FROM MR SINATR'S 1967 LONDON FILMED MOVIE 'THE NAKED RUNNER' AND JOHNNY MERCER'S PAEN TO LOST LOVE 'DRINKING AGAIN' (RECORDED AT THE JOBIM SESSIONS) WHICH NOBODY BUT SINATRA COULD TACKLE SO BEAUTIFULLY. SO TO SUM UP, A FLAWED COLLECTION, BUT AS ALWAYS WITH SINATRA ALBUMS, CONTAINING ENOUGH SHEER CLASS AND SINATRA'S UNSURPASSED MUSICIANSHIP TO RESCUE IT.

Far From His Best 14 Jan 2012

This album is Good Bad and Downright Ugly.
First the Good.Born Free,This Is My Song and the neglected Drinking Again are well up to the standard expected of a Sinatra Album.Something Stupid is as everyone knows is a catchy Pop offering and the Title Track is OK but whatever possessed Mr Sinatra to agree to record Some Enchanted Evening with an arrangement reminiscent of someone building a shed. When you compare this track to his marvellous recording for the Reprise Repertory series just what was he thinking of ?
As for the rest of the tracks sorry I can only describe these as nondescript.
