Excellent book... 21 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
HH the Dalai Lama has a reputation for teaching Buddhist philosophies in a way that people from the west can understand and this book is no exception.

The book includes basic information on Tibetan Buddhism such as Dharma teachings, how to overcome emotions like anger, hatred and jealousy and information regarding interpretation of scriptures as well as HH the Dalai Lamas usual brand of cheeky humour.

The book also covers the broad subject of Tantra. I personally feel this may be a bit out of place in a book designed for beginners to Buddhism and may daunt some with its complexity which is why I didn't give the book five stars. However, in general you'd be hard to go wrong reading this book. Like most of HH the Dalai Lamas writings they have been written with the Western reader in mind and his unique way of explaining things gets the message across more often that not.

...for the (very) better!I just wanted to do my bit to put the general rating nearer were it should be. This book will put light, wisdom and happiness in your life... how can anyone rate it below five stars is beyond me! If you love life, you'll love this book (whether you are Buddhist or not)!

A BEAUTIFUL BOOK 28 Feb 2001
By Sandra D. Peters - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is just what the title implies, an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. As I read through the pages of this book, what transpired was an overwhelming sense of spiritual peace and tranquility. In today's "crazy world," so many people are looking for peace of mind and "a haven from the storm" that will sustain them through the everyday trials and tribulations of life. If you are not familiar with Buddhism and are still searching for that "safe haven," I think you will, indeed, find this book on the philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism both enlightening and enjoyable.

A good introduction to Buddhism 30 Mar 2000
By P a u l Guth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Before reading this book, I didn't know much about Buddhism, and reading it made me realize just how little I really knew. It gave me a good perspective on Buddhist practice and especially the difference between Zen Buddhism (what I knew a little about) and the rest of the Buddhist world.
