Drawing heavily from The Tale of Gengi, this book analyzes the culture of the medieval Japanese elite. I read this years ago but the cultivated lives it describes left a deep impression: imagine a world in which love affairs were sparked by a single line of poetry passed beneath a screen, perfume-making was an art practiced by all your acquaintances, and watching the full moon was part of the social scene.
