I have been waiting for some time to get my hands on this book and it was well worth the wait. Not many people have heard of SJ Perleman as his best work is probably 60 years old, but to aficionados of humour, he is a paragon. He was a brilliant writer who combined wit, humour and satire in liberal portions. At times the tears were rolling down my eyes and at other times it was more of a chuckle. Perleman, was a wonderful observer and always had a humorous and sometimes bitingly satirical interpretation, of what on their own, were innocuous issues. For example, he had picked up an article in The Times, 50 years ago, where the House of Lords were complaining about their expenses. He then turns that into a play involving a Lord being interviewed by a tax inspector. It is as fresh and relevant today, as it was then. If you read it now in isolation, you would think it was written by somebody referring to current events. At one stage Perleman was a script writer for Groucho Marx and if you like that sort of humour, this is the book for you. I can thoroughly recommend it.
