4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent. 12 Jun 2003
Format:Paperback
Excellent first novel. I needed something to meet the free delivery quota and I hadn't heard of the book before, and so felt it was a risk. I thought the best I could hope was to get a few days distraction out of it, but no such luck as I finished it in one sitting. The protaganists story is touching without being sentimental and real in that it doesn't pull its punches. Adolescent boys have a hard time and if possible 'sissy's' have it even harder. Its not comfortable reading sometimes but the author skillfully had me believe in the boys courage, and how by making all the wrong choices, in the long run, he is really making all the right ones. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting! 8 Dec 2002
Format:Paperback
I found this a totally absorbing,deeply touching and beautifully observed story of the dilemmas of a boy who is suddenly propelled from the protected state of middle-class childhood into 'real life', both by his emerging sexual desires and by the disastrous disintegration of the certainties in his life.
The characters and their interactions are utterly believable, and there is an honesty about, and a mindblowing insight into, the inner workings of this young teenager as he is bruised and thrown about by the events of the story, but emerges standing proud by the end.

Format:Paperback
Mr. Soehnlein brilliantly portrays the end of the seventies in hard-edged New Jersey, and, in so doing, delivers a marvelous new, young hero: Robin Mackenzie. A coming-of-age story that has all the immediacy and angst and pain of the real thing. See if you aren't moved by this. You won't forget it.

5.0 out of 5 stars World Of Normal Boys 7 April 2013
By Ralph
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When you read this you will be laughing, crying with sadness and crying out in anger. As soon as I finished this book I checked to see what other books KM Soehnlein has written - and put in a order via amazon. A must read..... Also you do not haqve to be gay to enjoy and be moved by this book...... This book is not full of crude gay porn but a real solid must read story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captures the trials of adolescence. 2 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book. It gave an entirely believable account of the difficulties and emotions faced by the narrator, and never flagged or required suspension of belief. Not the easiest of topics - the gradual disintegration of family - but it well described how parents' behaviour can have long term consequences for their children's behaviour.

But Robin believes he has figured out the truth, a truth larger than anything his mother ever taught him-that life is mostly bad because people are capable of terrible things. Most people think that life offers you endless opportunities to get what you want, but Robin thinks there are endless possibilities for it all to be taken away. "e;
