Although this collection embraces a very rich collection of Nyman pieces, from the addictive, insistent refrain of 'Chasing Sheep' from the film 'Draughtsman's Contract' to his 'Carrington' pieces in 1995, and includes selections from String Quartet No. 2, and other individual pieces, such as the exuberant 'MGV', I felt the music frquently failed to catch fire.
The recording level seems recessed, giving the music a 'flat' compressed quality which seems to dampen the dynamic range. If you compare the overlapping pieces which also appear on Argo's The Essential Michael Nyman Band
, the difference is quite clear. Better to explore The Very Best Of Michael Nyman: Film Music 1980 - 2001
, or other collections if you wish more than those pieces used in films.
