Garp is one of the best books ever written, I list it along with "Catch 22" and such classics as "Animal Farm".
This film though just doesn't do justice to the book. OK it is a long and complex book and so necessarily difficult to capture but instead of getting an abridged story line there seemed to be no story line at all - just a set of vignettes.
Great acting throughout though and John Lithgow played a blinder as the transexual former football player.
I've read the book a dozen times and yes I could identify the scenes but if you don't know the book I reckon this film will confuse and disappoint.
Nothing against movies v books - "Cider House Rules" (by the same author) was a great movie.
