I think this is the best 'Best of...' album you can get of the Wildhearts. I do have a couple of issues with it though. It's an 'unofficial' release and the band had NO input or control over it - they won't get a penny from it's sales. Also, the packaging and artwork is very weak, and obviously done by someone who knew nothing about the band as the cover picture is much newer than the content of the CDs within.
However, this 3 CD set is terrific value for money. In spite of the title 'The Works', this set only covers the best of the first EPs and albums of the band's career - there is nothing here from the last four studio albums. 'The Works' is a very good and comprehensive 'best of' from the first few years of the Wildhearts, not only containing nearly the entire of their classic 'Earth Vs The Wildhearts' album as well as most the best stuff from the follow up 'P.H.U.Q.' as well as the two earlier EPs. There are also some gems from the 'Fishing For Luckies' album here, but what really makes this collection special is the many rare early B-side songs included here. Even the most hardcore Wildhearts fan will probably find one or two rarities here to fill gaps in their collection. As any fan of the band knows, some of the Wildhearts best songs have not appeared on their albums and were only ever available as B-side songs on the singles - the classic '29 x The Pain' being the best example, as well as one of the best rock songs ever written. It's almost worth buying this set for that song alone if you don't already have it.
If you've only recently discovered the Wildhearts, this is a pretty good place to start. And even if you already have all their albums (but not the singles) then this will fill a lot of gaps in your collection - but of course you'll still have a lot of catching up to do with the more recent albums and singles...
