5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! There isn’t a BETTER guide ANYWHERE! 10 July 2014
What an utterly amazing and truly STUNNING publication. Here, through the imaginative genius of Professor John Hedgecowe and the celebrated pop-up artist Ron Van Der Meer and his amazing FULLY-ANIMATED pop-ups, you will learn pretty much EVERYTHING you need to know about taking STUNNING pictures with vibrancy and attitude.

Beginning with a 3D pop-pup that displays the ANATOMY of an SLR (single lens reflex) camera that lets you see and comprehend the outside and the INSIDE of the machine, you are taken on an amazing step-by-step journey that covers:

-The construction of lenses and the facilities that each lens offers

- How the lens operates and the ‘angles of view’ each type of lens facilitates.

- How to select the CORRECT focal-length for the image that you wish to capture using an AMAZING FULLY-FUNCIONING LENS-SELECTOR TOOL similar to the ‘framing’ device professional cinematographers use to compose a shot, that you REMOVE from the book and press straight into service to INSTANTLY see what you are capturing, as well as visually see the effect the FOCAL-LENGTH of the lens has on the ‘DEPTH OF FIELD’ (the amount of ‘depth’ that is ‘in focus’).

- How to set the correct LENS APERTURE to achieve the required ‘depth of field’, using a FULLY ANIMATED LENS SHUTTER that operates like a REAL camera.

- How to determine and set the CORRECT ‘hyper-focal’ distance – an expression that here means the ‘mid-point’ distance INBETWEEN the NEAR object of interest and the FAR object of interest that you want in focus - utilising a fabulous ANIMATED instrument, so as to ensure that what you wish to capture is in pin-sharp focus.

a great book, a must have if you're into photography, worth the cash for the fold out of a 35mm camera at the start, which is as relavant in todays digital world as it was in film days, hard to come by, but amazon got me a mint copy, recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - well worth a play/read! 28 Nov 2006
Its brilliant! I was bought it when it was new and it's even still relevant to digital cameras. It teaches you in very easy explanations - and pop-ups, what all the bits of an SLR do, and helps you take better pictures. I'd highly recommend it. Mine cost 9.95, but that was a long time ago. Buy it if not for the instruction, then for the entire pop-up SLR camera on the first page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have! 4 Nov 2005

This book should be the first investment you make if you are considering photography as a hobbie or in a more professional manner. I am lucky to have a 1986 hard cover in spanish which I used in order to get started. From there on, you have all the tools to capture memorable images, it all depends on your sensitivity and creativity.

PS: Better than any Photography 101 course (and less expensive!)
