Product Description

From the Author

You can bring your heart into your work - and earn money!
This book was born out my personal experience of being in a well paid job in computer sales and marketing, but being unhappy because it wasn't really me. I was playing a role, not being authentic and not being creative, but was scared stiff to leave because I had so much invested in the car, the house, my identity, and also had precious little idea about how I could earn a living doing something that my heart was in. I knew it was no longer for me, and although I was terrified, I found the courage to quit and follow my heart to create a new career that my heart was in.

Over the last 10 years I have created this new career - inspiring individuals and organisations to be more authentic in their work, and bring the best of themselves to it, in order to have true fulfilment in their work. I am the founder of the Heart at Work Project in London, and have been a director of Alternatives at St. James's in Piccadilly. My book details my own personal journey of the joys and challenges of major life change, has dozens of cases studies of people who have created the work they were born to do, and is also a practical handbook to give you the ideas, inspiration and tools to do it yourself, including the biggest one for most of us - money! The book also helps you change within your existing work. I don't claim quick fixes - for me this process can take some time, focus and effort, but the rewards of the joy of finding and expressing our spirit and the fulfilment are worth it. I do believe we are most likely to be truly successful - personally and financially - when our heart is in what are doing.

I have been thrilled by thre feedback I have received from people who have read it. It seems to have hit a wave - so many of us are wanting our work and our livelihood to be an expression of the best of us - our spirit - and I hope my book can help you on your journey.

All best wishes, Nick Williams

I seem to be flowing against the tide here in giving this book a good review, but hey, that's what opinion is for I guess.
I was a senior recruitment consultant for 9 years. I came across lots of books that told you how to write a good CV, how to do well at interview, how to be effective and so on. If that's the sort of book you are after STOP RIGHT THERE and don't buy this book. This book will not give you answers, it will not tell you what to do or even how to do it.
However, I found the book extremely useful - in fact, unlike the other reviewers, I did find it life changing when I read it a number of years ago. The thing is, this book can't be just 'read through' it is a book that has to be worked through. You have to get your pen and paper out and write down your reactions and thoughts to the questions posed. I did this and years later found the notes I had made - it really was amazing how it had helped shaped my new career - and remember, I was a very successful 'professional' in the area of careers !
If you do this, it really makes you think about what is important to you, the way that you have been conditioned to think about work and money and pay etc. It helps you to break through preconceptions that are perhaps holding you back and helps you to take more initiative and change the way you see work.
As I said it doesn't tell you what to do, you are a unique individual - how could any book tell you that? You will find that you already have the answers, but they are locked away behind misconceptions and unhelpful conditioning. This book helps you to liberate them - it can be life changing if you let it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring joy to both your life and work! 13 Sep 2000
Like Nick I'd reached a crisis in my career, and found a copy of this unique book by chance. Neither your typical career guide nor self-help manual, I was gripped from the very first paragraph as I couldn't believe someone was articulating so precisely what I was feeling.
The book has inspired me to radically re-think my own career goals and lifestyle. However, I'm sure that anyone would benefit from reading this as the message is so universal: listen to your heart to bring happiness to your life; don't fall into the trap of living by society's expectations and your own false, disspiriting beliefs.
I could say a lot more, but instead will just highly recommend it - some of the passages you will read again and again. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transformational stuff! 1 Dec 2009
Nick has a wonderful warm, grounded style and manages to blend both inspiration and practical action steps to creating the life you want (not just the work you'll love).

I particularly love Nick's focus on:
- starting with BEING and letting the DOING follow from that, rather than the other way around
- Identifying your social conditioning and everything you've been taught to believe about work, and consciously choosing liberating beliefs about work.
- A focus on lifelong change/ embracing change and being an agile entrepreneur

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars very useful, refreshing and challenging 19 April 2000
By A Customer
This is not just another personal development book that says you only need to think positively and all will turn out OK. It is honest in that Nick acknowledges that change can be scary and challenging, but is very possible. It is full of case studies that make it very practical. Also a book about the person you were born to be, not just about work, with a strong spiritual theme running through it.

The Work you Were Born to do is not a book I was able to read through quickly. I found myself mulling over the ideas in it, returning to the text at a later time as if enjoying a substantial and nutritious meal, which, in a way, this book has been. I am someone who is more receptive to the ideas of those who wish to share their journey in understanding and personal growth than to those who present themselves as having already arrived and this is probably why I enjoyed the book so much. The ideas resonate strongly for me, particularly as someone who is in the process of changing his work life to something with more 'soul' and more joy.
Nick Williams says that we all have gifts and that our true joy lies in expressing these gifts and sharing the essence of who and what we are about through our work. Not only does Nick say this but he does it. There is an essence coming through in every chapter of 'The Work you Were Born to Do' that is so unique and valuable, that it speaks chapters in itself. Nick Williams clearly 'lives' and gives through this book and by doing so it exudes integrity. I see his book as an important paradigm busting piece of work.
The author draws from a very rich variety of teachings and ideas, both ancient and contemporary, as well as from his own inspiration and experience. These are all tightly knitted into a coherent whole and presented in a set of twelve easily understandable and accessible principles. These are however, radical in respect of how we have become accustomed to thinking about work in our times. Practical and courageous, this book is at the end of the day not just about work; it is a spiritual and life teaching which uses the down to earth world of work as its focus, and in so doing brings an important message right into the centre of our lives. 'The Work You Were Born to Do' is a gift well worth receiving.
