a very fine package 28 Feb 2006

This is a great representation of Anton Corbijn's work. The director's series has long been on my list of dvds to get round to buying and i'm glad I started with this. There is a wide selection of music videos here, though perhaps rather too many Depeche Mode promos for my liking [ not a fan!]. The commentaries are very interesting and they even managed to get some words from the usually monosyllabic Ian McCulloch. It's clear everyone wants to claim Anton for themselves. Bono comes out with the classic 'there was a time when Anton was the 5th member of U2', I thought that was Brian Eno?. Anyway despite the occasionally syrupy 'we're not worthy' stuff, it is great to here these big rock stars talking about something other than their new record or their band biography. Everyone from Nick Cave to Joseph Arthur [ had not heard of him before this dvd!] is united in their praise for Anton Corbijn. I really enjoyed the Henry Rollins video for 'Liar', it just seems quite random in there!. Can't wait to get some of the other ones in the series now. Great price too!

Having followed this guy's work primarily through still photographs, and then caught a few rare MTV promo appearances, I awaited this collection with eager anticipation. As an introduction to his range I suppose it serves a purpose.... But his best work is available elsewhere: Namely on U2 and Depeche Mode singles collections. How could this DVD not include the wonderfully inventive and moving Please by U2, and the rich and stylish In Your Room by dM?? Both of the artist specific collections also include commentaries or interviews, with Anton and musicians. So, unless you desperately want the other artists for their music, rent this and buy U2 Best of and DM singles 86-98 instead.
