Amazon.co.uk Review

Once a series has broken new ground, where does it go from there? Showtime's The L Word, concerning the relationships of a community of lesbian Los Angelenos, turned heads with its smart, funny writing and fully realized characters. Season Two offers more of the same, with some notable guest stars and experiments in narrative and music. This season, Jenny (Mia Kirshner) fully embraces her sexuality as her ex-husband/roomie (Eric Mabius) departs and voyeuristic documentary filmmaker Mark (Eric Lively) and womanchaser Shane (Katherine Moennig) move in. Shane and Jenny struggle good-heartedly over the affections of new character Carmen (Sarah Shahi), who isn't given much to do plot-wise apart from occasionally spinning records and serving as one corner of the love triangle. Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) start the season on the rocks due to Bette's infidelity; the introduction of the one-dimensionally nasty Helena Peabody (Rachel Shelley) causes further friction between Bette and Tina while playing havoc with Bette's curatorial career. Meanwhile, Dana (Erin Daniels) and Alice (Leisha Hailey) go from being best friends to being a whole lot more, providing some of the most touching scenes of the season. Kit (Pam Grier) takes on The Planet, the seeming center of LA's lesbian universe, converting it into a nightclub where, conveniently, guest-starring bands can play.

Strong points of the season include Bette and Kit confronting the death of their father (the superb Ossie Davis) and Shane's new job as a gopher for a high-powered Hollywood producer (the equally superb Camryn Manheim). Less strong are the distracting, neo-expressionistic passages meant to be glimpses into Jenny's creative mind and the interminable use of the series' theme song--re-interpreted in a number of genres--to the point of distraction. Mark's voyeurism, which crosses all sorts of boundaries as he installs hidden cameras around the house, is a brilliant way to challenge male viewers who may tune in just to TiVo their way to the sex scenes. That said, the arc of that particular story grows increasingly far-fetched as Mark somehow avoids criminal prosecution and instead endures the horrible fate of having Jenny refuse his offer of coffee and a muffin. Despite its flaws, The L Word is a show that deserves to be cheered on, not for its politics, but for the skillful way it conveys complex human entanglements with sensitivity. --Ryan Boudinot

As a gay man I love this show- there is a level or characterisation that other gay shows i've watched just don't have. These people seem real because they exist beyond the limiting world of the gay scene. The dialogue is funny and well written and the relationships complex.Season 2 is more political than season 1 in a different way- direct reference is made to the Bush (no pun intended)administration and Gloria Steinnem guest stars just to underline this. There is subtlety, tears, death but also no holes barred enjoyment. The characters are great -Bette who struggles with her self centred reaction at the loss of Tina in season 1, Alice who is a hysterical car crash waiting to happen and Tonya who is a classic comedy creation who should be portrayed working her way round all the girls just so we can marvel in the grotesque elements of her character. If youre a lesbian or a straight bloke youll really enjoy the sex, theyr's loads of it- I put the kettle on in those bits. That aside I love it and would recommend it unreservedly its a courageous and well made television drama - that illustrates gay life a lot more convincingly than anything else so far!!!!As an afterthought the only downside is the exit of Tim, Jenny's jilted husband - the gay community should petition to have him star in his own pole dancing drama!!!

Sat down and watched it all over one weekend, my partner and I were at one with the couch!
Think they did an good job overall, there are some great scenes in it, both sex and otherwise, won't go into details as will spoil fun for those who haven't yet seen it.
Season 1 was more groundbreaking but I felt Season 2 developed the characters more. Still finding Jenny highly annoying, I know she has her demons and all, but it kind of wears thin after a while.
I also found myself getting irritated by Tina, which I didn't think was possible but considering the stuff she goes through in Season 1, I guess it's easy to comprehend.
In addition, Kit stop picking total gits and find someone who deserves you.
Season 2 will keep you glued to your screen as you work through the various ups and downs with the ladies. Well worth watching if you were a fan of Season 1, roll on Season 3!

This season is better than the first big time...
it diggs more in the life of each caracter...
We see a side of shane not seen before (gosh how sexy she is).We get to know all of them better.
Yet, the most annoying thing is Jenny's development of caracter..She is definately not weird but ANNOYING!
At the begining she was interesting and real, what happened to her might happen to any woman, but later on she becomes disturbed and disturbing.
I won't spoil the story for the people who still haven't watched, but will add one more thing...what the hell happened with Marina...she just left? And why????
In all it is a great series...can't wait to watch season 3.
Go for it...

I have the first L Word DVD and enjoyed it. Like most seconds it is mostly a rehash with few sparkles. Saying however it was not bad, wonder if number is like? Bookworm.

So worth seeing!
I'd seen some positive reviews about The L Word but as a straight woman not convinced whether I'd enjoy it. How wrong I was! I watched TLW s1, followed swiftly by s2. Read more
