Book Description

18 Mar 2010

Book four of Eugene Peterson's landmark SPIRITUAL THEOLOGY series: foundational reading for the twenty-first-century church.

Continuing Peterson's evaluation of contemporary Christian Spirituality, THE WORD MADE FLESH is an extended meditation on language and the way it should be used in Christian community.

As with the first three books in the series, THE WORD MADE FLESH is written for both lay and academic audiences. Challenging but deeply rewarding, it combines scholarship with the human experience and lightness of touch for which Peterson is known.

'A tour de force in spiritual theology, combining incisive cultural analysis and biblical exposition with a sweeping and engaging vision of the Christian life' (for CHRIST PLAYS IN TEN THOUSAND PLACES). (Christianity Today)

'Rich, generous, and wise, Peterson's "conversation" will help readers at every stage of faith to live their faith more deeply' (for CHRIST PLAYS IN TEN THOUSAND PLACES). (Publishers Weekly)

Eugene Peterson keeps surprising us. It is hard to imagine where he will go next with his spiritual theology. His pen hugely blesses the church. (The Christian Century)

5.0 out of 5 stars another Peterson classic 4 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
The Word Made Flesh: The Language of Jesus in His Stories and Prayers is another excellent and thought provoking book from the pen of Eugene Peterson. He helps you get into the setting, culture and Biblical types of language. Yet the book has a contemporary ring to it. I expected something good and was not disappointed. Like all Peterson's books once finished you want to "savour it again!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading 28 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
'The Word Made Flesh' is an essential read to help understand the parables, prayers and language of Jesus. Eugene H. Peterson brings to the reader a home-cooked plate of spiritual meat. It takes a while to digest, but has been beautifully slow-roasted to help the good vitamins and proteins of rich understanding become one with us. I certainly will revisit this book again and again to enjoy the meal. There are some unique insights into the scriptures which add to the richness of knowing Jesus and help us in revealing Christ to the world around us. Superb. Praise God I was led to read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Word made Flesh 3 Jan 2012

Another classic from Eugene Peterson the author of "The Message". Scholarly, but completely readable, he draws you into the mind and situation of the people Jesus talked to. Jesus, the master story teller so gently but skilfully and unerringly speaking to the needs of his listeners with a message tailored exactly to each of them. A message of uncompromising realism but delivered with love and the offer of redemption.
In the second section on prayer we are invited to pray with Jesus as his prayers are recorded in the Gospels and learn to pray as Jesus taught - not by precept but by example
