Product Description

Adapted from the classic novel 'The Tunnel Escape' by Eric Williams, this is the story of British POWs trying to escape from a Nazi camp through a tunnel underneath their exercise horse. As their huts are too far from the boundary, one of the officers decides to start a daily gymnastics session, close to the boundary, in order to make digging a tunnel a lot easier and less likely to arouse suspicion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Based on a true story - "Rattling Good Yarn" 10 Jan 2002
Format:VHS Tape
This is the amazing story of how three British servicemen escaped from Germany during the last war. The problem they faced was that the huts were too far away from the wire for them to dig a successful tunnel - the answer was to move the start of the tunnel closer to the wire! To achieve this, the prisoners began an exercise regime using a home made box-horse. Having established this program they then sited the tunnel entrance inside the horse and underneath the eyes and guns of the German sentries and compound guards. They dug for months, some times leaving the horse unattended whilst they ran around the compound, but they finally escaped and made a successful "home run".

Yes this film is dated, and yes it is in black and white, but it graphically shows the determination of our fighting men under adversity - in this case, possibly it was that wrinkly in the corner of your pub nursing a pint!

Someone one said that "Truth is stranger that fiction"; it is, and without the assistance of Hollywood!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a novel 5 Jan 2007
By England
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Amazon reviewer calls the Eric Wiliams book 'The Wooden Horse' a novel. Wrong! This escape from Stalag Luft 3 (later the setting for the Great Escape) is a true story. The escape by 3 British officers was made by means of tunnelling under a vaulting horse.

For those who wish to read the story I recommend 'The Wooden Horse' by Eric Williams or in my opinion the better account 'Stolen Journey' by Oliver Philpot. The later is an excellent read. I also recommend this film. Well made and accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars because it is unique and true 18 Jan 2005
Format:VHS Tape
Extraordinary story as to how Eric Williams, Oliver Philpott and partner escaped from Stalag Luft 3.
Very ingenious, much more so than The Great Escape and without the histrionics, the film is a straight forward retelling of the story of the Escape done in a very British, underplayed style.
It is not in colour and not a charismatic as The great Escape but it is completely true and quite staggering in it's bravado.
A best selling book in the U.K. eric williams went on to write others, specifically of canal cruising in the Europe of the fifties.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Wooden Horse 6 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape|Amazon Verified Purchase
A fascinating story of the ingenuity of British POW's and their escape from the escape proof Stalag Luft 3. The Great Escape also took place here but in a different compound. There were no Americans involved in this true escape story and being a British film you don't have to sit through some of the scenes such as motorbike stunts included for American audiences. The film is based on the account by Eric Williams in his book The Wooden Horse but the book Stolen Journey by the third escaper Oliver Philpot is a better version in my opinion but in any case the film sticks to the book quite closely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Classic 17 Dec 2008
By Wiggles
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Another classic film that fails to receive the recognition it so rightly deserves. The fact that its a true story only adds to the unbelievable courage of those prisoners.

Must for those who appreciate classic war films

All poeple in there teens and twenties should be made to watch these films. As it shows how the uk people at the time keeped our shores safe and even if trying to escape back to the uk to fight. One has to wonder why they bothered?.As the uk is in such a bad state now.But as films go on ww2 this is worth repeated viewing. As it gets older the stars of the time seem like old friends. Rent or buy now Guy Vase Aberdeen
