Product Description

Product Description

This is the first authoritative account of the history of the wooden bowl. It details evidence of the turners craft dating back 4000 years, and looks at the development of lathe technology, as well as the tools and timbers used. The author has been given unprecedented access to study and photograph important collections, many of which have never appeared in print before. The superb photographs show priceless, gold-adorned vessels buried with Saxon Kings, Tudor bowls from the wreck of the Mary Rose, and even a bowl which some claim to be the Holy Grail.

A real gem 6 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is a gem of a book. It is well written, researched and wonderfully presented.

Robin is evidently a master of his craft and his enthusiasm and knowledge leaps from every page.

This is an absolute must of a book for anyone interested in history and woodcraft and would compliment anybody's book collection. I wish this first book of Robin Wood the very best of success.

A Great Resource 17 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
The Wooden bowl is a great resource on a couple of levels. Those who are interested in the history wooden bowl their uses. The social history aspect of the book is well researched. I found the facts that the British Isles was a wood-ware culture for the better part of a thousand years. Also the idea that wooden table ware was found across the social spectrum and not only used by the poor.

Aficionados of British timber species suitable for turning will also find this a valuable resource. Last and certianly not least is the exploration of various turning methods that precede powered lathes.

The wooden bowl is well researched , referenced and written by a wood turner with a real passion for the past.

The Wooden Bowl by Robin Wood 13 Sep 2011
By vwoodcock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an interesting retrospective about kitchenware, specifically wooden bowls, authored by Robin Wood, the well known pole turner who resides in the UK. Mr. Wood has done a good job with the very small number of fragments and whole artifacts that date from Early Modern Europe. The book covers methods of turning a wooden bowl on a human powered lathe in several regions of the world, it is well illustrated with very clear photos, and he discusses bowl and craft turning in the British Isles in both the past and in modern times. He also included a section in the back of the book that shows how he turns bowls and plates out of trees that he sources locally.
An excellent book for those interested in the history of lathes and wood craft, advanced woodworkers, and also of interest to archeologists, historians and reinactors.
