I initially bought this recorded set on vinyl in the early 1960's. Over the past 40 years it has remained one of my favorite records.Lewis' recorded work outside the MJQ appears limited, and the latter group's output does not appeal to some people who categorise it as chamber music. This set is quite different. It features Lewis as arranger and pianist within a core group of Jim Hall, George Duvivier, and Connie Kay, accompanied on various tracks by Paul Gonsalves, Herb Pomeroy, Eric Dolphy, Benny Golson, Gunther Schuller and James Rivers. Gonsalves is superb on the extended track 'Body and Soul' while the other tracks, particularly the small-group 'standards' are presented with eloquence and sensitivity. This particular version of 'I remember Clifford' remains my favorite to date. The two latter tracks on this set were not included on the original record, and must count as a bonus! This is a beautiful timeless set; don't try to categorise it too closely just buy it and enjoy it!

This album dates from 1960 and was recorded over three days and features a core quartet of John Lewis (p), Jim Hall (g), George Duvivier (b) and Connie Kay (d) that features on four tracks. This is augmented on three other tracks by combinations of: Herb Pomeroy (t), Paul Gonsalves (tenor), Gunther Schuller (french horn), Eric Dolphy (alto), Benny Golson (tenor), Jimmy Giuffre (baritone).
Overall a selection of seven tracks, one ("Body And Soul") lasting over fiftenn minutes; the other tracks are shorter.
This album is pretty laid back stuff that gives an opportunity to listen to top musicians of the time out of their typical environments (one expects Lewis to be with the MJQ,, Gonsalves with Ellington etc.)

Room to breathe 13 Jan. 2001
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
There is nothing hurried about this disc. That said, the music is focused and will stretch your mind. Lewis employed masterful melodic improvisers here: Paul Gonsalves, Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Giuffre, Jim Hall among others. Listen to "Body and Soul" as it builds powerfully and the soloists explore every possible melodic theme, where the quiet power of these master musicians is almost too much to take. Listen to "I Remember Clifford" where the players are essentially the MJQ with Jim Hall replacing Milt Jackson. Listen to "The Stranger" (written by a young Arif Mardin) with that harmonious-yet-discordant brass. This set swings, but oh-so-elegantly. Just like Mr. Lewis.

A True Classic 21 Jun. 2000
By Emile Barrios - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Whether you're an old-time jazz afficionado or new to the genre, this album is essential. In my opinion, Lewis' lovely solo on "Body & Soul" makes his version virtually definitive - 15 minutes of bliss. The rest of the album, particularly "Afternoon in Paris", is at the same level. "Wonderful" is the perfect title for this record.
