Book Description

1 Feb 2006
Travelers from Twenty-Fourth Century Earth colonize a new planet. Unable to detect mystical life forms, the explorers mistakenly believe the planet to be uninhabited. When the settlement descends into explosive internal clashes, the colony's women escape from what has become an oppressive captivity. Fleeing for their lives, the women establish Woden as their new home. Far distant from the first site and forever isolated from Earth, they begrudgingly allow the men's community of nearby Hengist under their rule so that they may all survive. Centuries later, Woden's inhabitants know nothing of Earth. Sam and Jandra, now the women leaders of Woden, lead their community in saving Woden from enemy forces. As their community prepares for battle, they begin to learn of Woden's long-unknown past, their attraction for each other, The Realm's Mystics, and the treachery and deception that soon leads them directly into the middle of The Realm and its struggles. Enter with us through the gates to Woden. Come and be a part of an epic adventure, as the women leaders of Woden learn about the mystical realm from which they have been long isolated. Book I in the Mystic Women of The Realm Series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 1 - A Great Start 10 Jan 2009

The Women of Woden is the beginning of a fantastic saga that rivals Harry Potter or Bilbo Bagins's trials, tribulations and travels. One of the most detailed and witty tales I have read in a while. The humour is both wry and sharp and often brought on a smile. Robbie Collins weaves a rich story full of battle action, rough justice and harsh punishment; combined with very intricate and at the same time very simple relationships within the community of Woden. If you can ignore the cover design which is very amateurish and childish, Robbie Collins has produced a written masterpiece. Give it a go, you will soon be ordering Book 2, then 3, then 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly amazing book! 6 Mar 2006
By Maggie King - Published on Amazon.com
I loved the strong women characters, the town of Woden, and the high sense of mystery and action. Even the men of Hengist are compelling Women warriors - what fun! And the descriptions of the world are stunning. The characters are so strong and well developed that they have become my friends. Women and lesbians who miss having a strong sci-fi/fantasy have finally found their epic series. I can't wait until Book II comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Women of Woden 2 May 2006
By R. Lake - Published on Amazon.com
I couldn't put the book down from the moment I started to read it. The mystical component was exceptional, right up there with "The Lord of the Rings" series. The characters were well developed and bring much insight to the reader about human relationships. I can hardly wait to see what Robbie has in store for the rest of the series!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not uninteresting, however... 27 Jan 2011
By M. Melcher - Published on Amazon.com
After reading all six books of this series, I'm going to voice my overall opinon for all of them here. Minor Spoilers ahead.

The world shown to us by Robbie Collins isn't without fascination. It isn't a totally bad series and has its moments. However there are two major points that were a real enjoyment-killer for me and only allow me to give a rather negative rating for this.

Firstly, the heroine from the second book onwards is way too overpowered. In this world she quickly rises from a powerful individual to a kind of messiah and we are often shown and told exactly that. She manages to jump every hurdle in her path easily. She even comes back from the dead two times and has the power to bring others back too. Much more impressive than her were the villains for me. These people who dare to confront this force of nature, that is our protagonist, rarely last more than a brief encounter with her though. They usually are defeated quickly and die slow and horribly.

Which brings me to my second negative point. The level of violance and cruellty on the side of the "good guys" is rather intense. The villains are really devilish, but the heroines aren't far behind. Some examples of what the "good guys" do would be: Torture to get information, torture to punish a villain, pitting prisoners against each other to fight to the death, killing soldiers that already surrendered, mutilating enemies as a warning, annihilating a city and every soldier, civilian and child within it, spreading illness across the enemies lands, and so on. At some (few) points the heroines lament how sad it is they are forced to commit such acts, but I never really felt that to be really the case. Most of their acts don't feel necessary at all in fact.
I found it hard to feel sympathy for the heroines. It never feels like they are in real danger anyway and all that cruelty makes them look vengeful to me. That more than anything else.

In the end I can only give two stars. Maybe you can overlook these flaws and aren't as bothered by them as I was. To me this book and the rest of the series proved to be a waste of time and money, mostly. If I hadn't already bought them all at once, I probably wouldn't have finished the series. I just hope anyone considering buying these books will at least keep the things I pointed out in mind before doing so. You can decide for yourself if it bothers you or not.
