Two years have passed since the event of "Gods in Chaos". Jill Bioskop, the blue-haired journalist, is crazed by the murder of her extra-terrestrial lover and takes refuge in memory-blocking drugs. Meanwhile, Alcide Nikopol has regained his sanity but is haunted by visions of an Egyptian god. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

One third of the Nikopol story 10 Jan 2007
By wiredweird - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This installment follows reporter Jill Bioskop through a surreal, shifting landscape. The scattered nature and fabulous features of this nightmare world suggest that it lies wholly within her own mind - an uncertain foundation for any construct, because of the drugs that undermine her memory. For Nick, the shifting nature of his world comes not from insufficient reality, but from an excess. His mundane world of London and Berlin is overlaid with the supernatural world of the classical Egyptian gods.

This book offers all the best of Enki Bilal's storytelling and artwork. It features the dense backgrounds, strong characterization, and otherworld coloring that we hope for in his work. It also offers the worst of Bilal's disjoint storytelling. In this case, the plot seems fragmentary partly because a third of it was in the prequel, "Gods in Chaos," and another third in the sequel. That leaves us working through the one-third of a story that's actually in this book, trying to make sense of it as if it were a whole plot.

Maybe I would have gotten more from the story if my used copy had come with the four-page insert that was originally part of the package. Since it's Bilal, I somewhat doubt that. I'll content myself with Bilal's unique art and bleak characters, and those give plenty to enjoy.

Master at work 9 Oct 2011

It's been a long time since I met Enki Bilal in Belgrade and saw his original boards of The Woman Trap. His work still mesmerizes me, his ingenious drawing, off the wall details and subtle coloring. The story of the first part of Nikopol Trilogy is excellent, probably one of the best in French comics scene of the 80s. Quirky and poignant, it brings the complex mix of fascist Paris government, renegade Egyptian divinities, space aliens, religious and ethnic gangland, a truly weird eggkrieg(?!) and wonders of blue and red pills mercilessly consumed by Jill, a Liberation journalist who reports from the far-flung future. There is a movie Immortal loosely based on this story that was released in 2004, but obviously without enough cash to bring to life the glamourous quality of his comic book masterpiece.

ThIs book was originally published by Catalan in late 80s and I was shocked when I found it on amazon for $4, still shrink-wrapped. As with many Catalan USA books, the print is not stellar, but still an incredible value at the price, of course with a front page of a fake Liberation newspaper as a bonus insert.

An obvious alternate choice is the Humanoids reissue of the complete Nikopol Trilogy. It is a better print than Catalan, but be ready to shell out at least $60 for it.

Long live Gogol d'Algol!

The 2nd installment of Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy. WONDERFUL! 16 Aug 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This bande dessinee is, to my tastes, the most personal and psychological of the Nikopol trilogy. The art is bautiful, and Jill is very strange and, at the same time so nice...BUY IT (Also read Bilal's best work yet, 1998's Le sommeil du Monstre. Sold 350,000 copies in france so far.(Learn, you superhero-saturated north american comic market!!)

OK well - Jonathan Ross has made a decent fist of entering the comic universe - which celebrity can't you wait for to enter the fray with their own graphic novel, and er, if you like, what would it be about ? 1 1 day ago
